I used to slip two, thin, hard vinyl sheets in my jacket to help disperse the energy from chest hits. But that was foil. I don't really need it so much in epee now.

Maybe when I'm old and hunched over and value my life to be a bit longer, and by having it would spare me several years of my life, then sure, I'd wear one.

If I'm getting hit hard on the chest, I'm too close and my feet are the problem.

Treat the cause, not the symptoms.

Unless being too close and hit hard with a manplate is intentional.

Symptom isn't bruising, symptom is opponent's hits not registering.

Why would you wear.....armor? I understand the point of wearing things to prevent death and severe pain, but if you cant take a poke from a pretty flexible blade, then you probably don't have the strength to fence in the first place.

Since I dont fence foil, I really dont care abou the competitive advantage.

well thats really the only reason that you would wear one [as a guy] fencing foil now if you're smart.

as far as taking hits goes, some people are sensative or arn't used to that being poked feeling yet.

pffft. you guys pretend to be so macho about the whole manplate thing.

Broke a rib skiing, hard to fence without the man-plate with a cracked rib, but never since... wore it for about 2 weeks.

Every so often, one will run across somebody who uses a magic combination of a stiff blade, closing distance hard, and punching with a bent arm. Or a remise artist who thinks they can close out and hit at the same time, if they just whip their blade at your chest hard enough.

I wore a chest protector for the first time at practice on Monday. It was worth about 3/4 touch per 5-touch bout. Where it really seems to make a difference is if I made a small mistake in distance on a preparation, and my opponent takes advantage of it by attacking into the prep.

Because you are fencing because you love the sport. Not because you need a piece of stupid plastic to give you an advantage. At the tournament at candlewood fencing center last weekend alot of folks were still wearing these plastic things. Its really stupid, just have a good time and fence.

Ah right, you told me about that one. Mike "I wear a plate inside AND outside my uniform" Dote.

As far as I'm concerned, anything that can take a solid hit to the middle of your chest and have it NOT go off should be made illegal.
