| Greatest U.S. President Kinda a spinoff of the Canadian thread.
Who's the greatest U.S. president? I'ma try to include the 10 most popular, but I might leave 1 or 2 out.
I think I spelled a couple wrong. Also, I couldn't think of any more than 8, so I put Reagen and Clinton. I probably left an obvious one out, huh. Sorry.

| Washington is the reason its not the Kingdom of America, andh really set the mold for all other presidents. If it wasn't for him, I doubt the country would have survived past ten years. I also heard he did something in a war or something, it probably wasn' important. ;-)
(I honestly don't see how you could argue that Washington wasn't our greatest. Reagan and FDR are the two party icons, TR made america a world power, Lincoln united the country, and Jefferson expanded our country greatly, but Washington was da man)

It is true that Washington was offered more powers than he accepted, and that there was a faction who wished him king, but the delegates at the second Constitutional Convention were hardly ready to accept a full monarchy. At worst, they might have copied the British system of government.
There were a few minor incidents that don't speak well of him (as is true for any president) as well. One example is that he and his wife supported a more aristocratic form of democracy. (More his wife than him, but I assume that, considering the times, the thoughts of his wife reflected his thoughts as well.) |

| I went with Teddy as well, because although his actions during his presidency were not as distinguished as some of the other leading candidates (Lincoln, for example), he truly represented the American dream in his life. He was a though guy, but a philosopher. He wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty, yet he was President of the U.S.. Etc.... |

| If by "best" ex-president you mean you're glad he's no longer president, I'm with you.
Carter's a dear sweet man, but I do wish he'd shut up and go back to building houses. Seems like every time he opens his mouth, it is either to denigrate the US without knowing what he's talking about, or to be an apologist for a corrupt dictatorship, or to spout moral equivalence between soldiers and those who target civilian women and children, or to otherwise use his position to embarrass the rest of us.

| FDR. In terms of broad political movements, the entire latter half of the 20th century has been republican attempts to undo the New Deal. The paleo and neoconservative movements are almost entirely a reaction to the ideas implimented by FDR. Now that's a lasting imprint on society. Moreover, he guided the US through the worst economic depression and largest war in its history. |

| The distinction between the two being that Washington fenced "for real." TR actually had a salle built into the White House (I wonder if it's still there). You can find a good list of Presidents who fenced in By the Sword, by Richard Cohen, I believe.

| I know this is late but, how about in addition to stating your favorite president, list specific accomplishments to backup your claim. This will help to educate people like myself who slept thru history class.
I'll start. George Washington cut down cherry trees, never lied, kicked some red coat and hessian butt, and got us going in the right direction as a country. |
