Competitions: Florida in January Are there any opens taking place (M Foil) in Florida in January? I had a quick glance at SE sections website but couldn't find anything.
I ask because a friend is travelling to Florida at that time and us Brits can now count any foreign open towards our domestic rankings.

Array The SE sections web site doesn't really have very many tournaments posted. There are 3 divisions in Florida based on geography. To my knowledge, there are 3 open foil events in Florida during January.
1/8-1/9/2005: Tampa Bay Melee - near Tampa
1/22/2005 - River City Duel TIl You Drop - Jacksonville
1/29/2005 - Seminole Showdown - Clearwater/St. Pete area (team events)
I think that for your purposes, however, the point standings they are referring to would be gained only at a national event (even we don't earn points at local events). There is a Div I NAC Jan 14-17 in Overland Park, KS. That may be worth looking into. -

The points would be gained for any open, so unless the event is restricted to people from that region, or mixed, or run on non-standard rules (so not the team), it would count for British ranking.
Do you know where I would find entry forms?

Array Holy crap I want to fence for the GBR! Any open event? We have like 30 a year in an easy drive of me! Just another lost soul saved by the (hit) First Church of EPEE!

If you go to the 'find a club' section of the USFA website and click on Central Florida Division they have a competition calendar that lists contacts for the tournaments. The other divison webpages didn't seem as helpful for statewide tourneys. The other option would be to contact some of the clubs directly. -

Try this website from the Central Florida division: http://www.centralflfencing.com/home.htm -

Robert, I'd actually suggest it is a very long way to lug fencing kit to get a very very small amount of points. Unless those competitions have anyone in the top 100 in the FIE rankings, its not going to be worth much at all even if you win it! So only worth doing if you are doing it for fun... -

Robert Shame he/she is not going to Las Vegas, Duel in the Desert is a good "holiday" comp to do at that time of year. Not sure about comps in Florida which may not have as large an entry. -

Duel in the Desert wouldn't count for British ranking points for men, since it is a "mixed" competition.... but Robert's friend may have this problem with a lot of US "Open" competitions - since many are also open to women... If Robert's friend is a woman, then she will be able to count the WF events (although at a NIF of 0.25 x the entry number, they are not likely to get many points...)
