| why Dubya is going to Halifax. there are many speculations about why Dubya is turning down the usu. speech to the combined Parliament - where Reagan was hackled, a common occurance [lol] - and chooses to visit Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, instead. this is one explanation. http://www.herald.ns.ca/stories/2004.../fcartoon.html
The official explantion is to thank the maritimers for putting up the American travelers when the US air space was closed after 9/11.
decide which one you believe.

| Wow. I actually had no idea that US Presidents ever addressed Canada's parliament. Does this happen a lot? Why? Do they address the Mexican legislature as well?

He addresses the Canadian parliament because, unbeknownst to the majority of either U.S. citizens or Canadians, we own Canada. It started with NAFTA, and has been proceeding smoothly according to plan. They'll break it to the rest of the world in, oh, 10 years or so.
Mexico is a little more delicate, but we're working on it...the First Phase was to get all the Mexicans here, and that seems to be proceeding well...

| It's part of Bush's tactic for not having America hate him, carefully labeled " Remember 9-11, 9-11, 9-11!!!" by Karl Rove and Dick Cheney. It got him elected, and now I'm guessing that they hope that if they bash it into our skulls enough, America will follow their every whim. . .
I'm guessing it'll be a "heartwarming" thing where Bush gallantly spends a lot of time looking resolute and staring into the distance, slightly squinting. . .

PK | Wouldn't it be a little late for a thank-you note? Or has he been busy hunting terrorists and tax payers and couldn't get to it earlier? |

He isn't coming to thank Canada. Because if he is, he's going to the wrong province.
When the US air space was closed on 9/11 most of the planes that were diverted ended up in Gander, NEWFOUNDLAND, not Nova Scotia. http://www.gov.nf.ca/tourism/ http://www.ganderairport.com/
Most of the air travelers were put up by the people of NF opening their homes to the travelers.
Is this another of proof that if dubya was, as he infers, the agent of God, he might be getting the wrong message?

| Do you want to know the REAL reason? You want to know the REAL reason Dubya's coming to Canada?
He's checking out Canada, to decide if he can beat the DDs - disappointed Democrats - to their punch. if things go REALLY wrong, he might want to move to CDA... Then we can collectively slam the door in his face.

They're all the same. Somewhere north of The Border where summer is defined as three weeks of bad curling weather...It's not like it's Texas or Florida, after all...

| Now now, there's no need to go picking on the "Maple Leaf State" like that.
I read an interesting poll today where a bunch of Canadians were asked their attitude toward the US. Something like 85% had a positive attitude. But interestingly, fewer than a third thought that Americans have a positive attitude towards Canada.
I cannot understand why Canadians would think we don't like them. I can't think of a single negative thing ever being said about Canadians. Plus, they're our biggest trading partner, our number-one supplier of oil (no lie), we have the longest open border, and the most friendly relations of any bordering nations in the world.
Also, though it doesn't sound nice now that I put it into words, Americans don't have negative feelings about Canadians because we truly don't think about them. It's not a country that comes up in conversation.
For example, I was surprised to read that the previous PM was vitriolically anti-US. I can guarantee that most Americans wouldn't know this, either. Seems like a lot of wasted vitriol.

It shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over-looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon."
God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil so as to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, and they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth."
"But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?"
"Not really," replied God, "just wait and see the neighbours I am going to give them."

| LOL!
But such jokes sort of prove Scrapinpeg's point. Canadians doing a lot of thinking about Americans, but not the other way around. Americans don't tell jokes about Canadians.
How come all this obsession with Americans, I wonder? It's not like we're a threat or anything. And Canadians certainly aren't jealous of their big neighbor. It is a puzzlement.

I'm not sure what I was missing in my comment - perhaps only that I should have known in which providence Parliment could be found? Else, I'm not sure what I missed. I did get that the delayed thank-you was a poor cover up for the real purpose. But, I didn't read too much more into your post. |
