Can anybody suggest good DVD fencing training material and truly confirm its worth buying it?

Simply watching high level bouts can be fairly useful, e.g. when are attacks into preparations (AIP) made? You might find that they are very often made when the opponent is advancing fast with their arm well withdrawn and posing no great threat. Previously, you might have made your AIPs when the opponent was just advancing en guarde, and therefore very often would get your AIP called as counter-attack - not good if the opponent lands a hit! That's just one example. Another is a bout from the 2003 Foil World Cups, which gives ideas about how to deal with point in line (the chinese guy used lots of lines).

Actually, a lot of what you can learn from many of the foil bouts currently on the market, is compiled in a single CD-ROM: Foil Fencing Actions, by Walter Flaschka who is a regular on this forum. If you're not a foilist... oh well. But anyway, whatever your weapon, there are lots of DVDs/CDs that you can get on F.NET and fencing footage. Along with any replies that you get here, there might be some useful reviews over there.

Tyshler do some decent stuff, I got some foil training CD-ROMs, you might find them useful. But apart from everything, I wouldn't get too enthusiastic about books/DVDs etc as though they are the answer to your troubles, because you might find yourself being very frustrated when you're still having those problems. It's not ideal to try and learn technique from a video/DVD/CD/book, that's really for you and your coach.

Tactics on the other hand, well there aint much difference wether that comes from your coach's mouth, speakers on your computer or the pages from a book - tactics are by their very nature based on theory, which doesn't as much require a coach, although its still good to confirm things and generally get feedback on your theory. However, you can't use this theory if you don't have the right technique, so go for some private coaching about 1 hour/week if you can.

    Paragraphs. Please.
I caught this morning morning’s minion, king-
dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird,—the achieve of; the mastery of the thing!

In my opinion, the best Epee DVD is the 2002 Men's Epee DVD, which I edited. There is no commentary but this is the best resolution footage that clearly shows the blades and slow motion replay. For the cost, its the best.
It is being sold here by Craig at the Fencing.Net Store.

    This is followed by the:
    a) 2004 Olympic individual Men's Epee
    b) 2003 World Championship DVD
    c) Mr. Thompson goes to Cuba DVD

b and c are available here. If you have further questions, or you are interested in Women's Epee, please email me at texasepilepsy@earthlink.net
