Why would it disturb you that your students like it? Not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination: poorly written, bad acting by the minor players, some poor photography, and they fence sabre with epees. But it's the only movie about fencing that is out there.

Don't worry about it. We've had guys who think that this is how it should be done." If they don't wise up they leave of their own accord.

I think its a fun movie but nothing to get worked up about. Check out Eric Roberts shoes at the end - sheer comedy!!!

There are far better films with fencing in them - unfortunately they tend to be swashbucklers. I personally love The Duellists and Scaramouche - great movies.

eh...it's something to laugh about when you're out with the fencing gang...

I agree with all the other thoughts put out on this strain, the movie has some definite faults. I'd be a little disturbed too if my students were attracted to the film, as I can see that beginners might pick up on some bad fencing habbits demonstrated in the movie(I don't teach, I'm just speaking perspectively). "By the Sword" is just some easy entertainment, and it's better to watch it thinking of it as something other than a fencing movie. I think the best movie with fencing in it has to be the old "Mark of Zorro", Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone have a great sabre duel at the end!

This was my introduction to fencing. I had always wanted to do it, and a few years ago(like 4) I saw it late late night on the USA
network. The week after I was fencing.

As far as the movie goes, it is not that horrible. The fencing is not great but not the worst that I have ever seen.

The best fencing ever captured on film is on a little movie called "Conquest," featuring
Jenna Jameson. On the DVD they have behind the scene footage of the "actors" training in full fencing grear.

This isn't the Dolph Lundgren film about the olympics is it? Regardless, I actually forced myself to sit through it recently as I saw Dolph with an epee as I was flipping through the channels and couldn't help myself. Oh my gosh...did they even have any real fencers helping set up the bouts? Another show of two guys and a girl fencing sabre using an epee. Really bad movie.

The Dolph Lundgren movie is called Pentathlon (or something like that), and actually does include some fencers. A well-known US pentathlete is in the movie as an opponent to Dolph in some qualifying round.

By The Sword stars Eric Roberts (with a slash to his cheek) and Mia Sara.

The movie has its faults but what movie doesnt? I like to show it to friends or guest who are-not familiar with fencing then i get to explain whats realistic and whats not. Plus you have to admit a janitor fencing master thats cool.........arcon
