What does FIE mean, and what has to be FIE approved

I here FIE everywhere, and I don't know what it is. I also know that certain things have to be FIE approved for regional competitions. And does having FIE approved attached to a blade increase it's value and why?

FIE = Federation International Escrime = International governing body of fencing

FIE gear is NOT required for local tournaments or US National Events. It is required for international competition.

The FIE certified stamp of approval means that the equipment meets or exceeds certain minimum safety standards. For masks/clothing it must have a specific puncture resistance expressed in newtons.

Not only is FIE stuff safer, but the quality of the equipment is obviously much better than non-FIE stuff.
