Ouch! Have you met many of these so called "Christians"? I'm guessing that aside from being able to read and quote passages from the bible, similarities with "Christians" goes no further. I would go further to speculate these people like to shave their heads, have lots of tatoos, and adore this short guy with a cropped mustache.

    [Sarcasm]

Leviticus 23:43- And lo, the evil men in Israel didst disobey the goodliness and holiness of the state, and proceeded to attempt to marry each other because of their affection. And lo, an angel came down to the king, and then told him to send upon the people a new edict, that "Thou shalt love as thou hast been loved, unless the person thou ist supposed to be loving is gay, or if both men loving are men." And there was a great cry of joy throughout the land, for by attempting to fufill their dreams, the queer men had let the devil into Israel, I guess, and was ruining the lives of the goodly people. They were then smitten as was standard in those times.

    [/SARCASM]

Seriously, come on. Jeff posted a very interesting set of quotes from the Bible that I have somewheres on my computer, that detail the laws we would still be following if the Old Testament were taken word for word.

Did Jesus not reject the Pharisees? They were not evil, as one might assume, they were the preists and scholars of the Bible, who had taken it too literally. Jesus rejects their teachings in the Bible when it interferes with his new laws, and I don't see why it should be different now.

"And", when used in logical equations, is represented by multiplication. Therefore "Women require time and money" is 'translated' to "women = time * money"

Yes, many of them are. There are few things I detest more than hypocrites.

No, not in all senses of the word, I'm pretty sure. There is only one English word to cover four senses described in Greek by four distinct words - unfortunately, I can remember only three of these words. Agape is the love between God and people, phileo is the love of good friends. I think the word I can't remember refers to familial love. Eros refers to lust and sexuality. I'll look it up if I get the chance, but I'm pretty sure that loving thy neighbor is talking about phileo. What is condemned when it is between people of the same sex, is eros.

Another bunch of people I detest.

They have found passages condemning homosexuality, and are using them to say that God hates the people who are subject to it. Homosexuality is a sin...but like any other sin, it is forgivable, and is not cause for hating the sinner.

AFAIK "eros" and sexuality between close male or female friends wasn't that uncommon in ancient Greece, although at least in males it was a phase, normally during adolescence, after which it was deemed appropriate to eventually end up in a heterosexual relationship.

We're not talking about ancient Greece, though. We're talking about the ancient Middle East, and the Greek language.

We were talking about the interpretation of texts from the New Testament IIRC.
The New Testament was written in Greek, and to interpret a language, you have to also look at the way specific words evolved in that language.
I agree with you on the subject of difficulties in interpreting differences between English and ancient Greek. But as a language evolves as a part of a certain civilization (Hellenism), you have to take that into account too...

Besides that, I am not particularly wel versed in the New Testament or the discussion whether homosexuality is right or not according to it...

A worthy view. You however sidestep the issue that this particular bunch of people (I have a hard time calling them Christians, but I'm sure that's how they refer to them), have explicitely stated their views. They believe that their views are substantiated by the Bible. They seek to impose their views on society. Should they be allowed?

Homosexuality is still wrong according to the New Testament.

You have to look at the originating civilization, somewhat. But not everything is relevant. I fail to see the relevance of Greek homosexual practices in this issue.

I think I kind of tripped, more than sidestepped. Or maybe just picked up a penny at the wrong moment.

No, these people should not be allowed to impose their views on society. They are hateful.
