    Junior Olympic Qualifiers

The USFA web site is down again
I was trying to verify the number of qualifiers to JO through division Qualifiers. I know it is 25% but is it a minimum of 2 or 3?

    Thanks

    Cheers

According to the chart in the info package that Christine Simmons sent out, 3 fencers qualify. If 4 or more enter, then you have to run the tournament.

I just checked the chart and it appears that I was mistaken - it is 3 minimum. According to the chart, if 3-12 fencers are present, then 3 qualify. For 13 or more fencers, you apply the 25% rule (rounding up).

If 3 show up, and they do not fence, do they qualify? IOW, are the rules written such that actual fencing is required?

And similarly, if a Y10 or Y12 participant is the only entrant in a given event at an RYC and, therefore, the event is not fenced, has the fencer qualified for summer nationals?

They do qualify. Our division makes them fence though to see who is first second and third.
Same with RYC, if they choose to fence they can, if not we make them...

The actual fencing is not required if the numbers are at or below the minimum number of qualifiers.

Mmmm, just went back and reread the minutes from last October's (10/03) BoD meeting. All of the qualification changes there were to events at summer nationals. My general sense was that there was intent to adjust JO quals as well, starting with this season, but I'm not sure that it was ever actually done. At that meeting all of the minimums for SN qualification that were 2 were raised to 3, going into effect with last season.

There was another motion passed at this past October's meeting to make qualification flow down from juniors to cadets at JO's and SN's, but that doesn't affect the minimums.

I'm not convinced that 3 is the actual correct number for JO's, although I do believe that that was the intent.
