    Fencing gay?

    [rant]
    Gah,
Just frustrated. When I tell my non-fencing buddies about fencing, they invariably make some crack about fencing being gay. I just dont understand. Its sword fighting, whats gay about that? And they are all in their mid-20's or older too. You'd think they'd be past that.
    *sigh*

And what's wrong with being gay? I'd think they would be past *that*.

Well the limited fencing shown on tv is fairly cheesy. The image of the fencer in a jacket with a red heart still persists and will continue with the limited media exposure that high level fencing gets.

    Fencing = Gay?

    Isn't it?

I mean we fencing guys have impeccable fashion sense, are intelligent, witty, and all the girls want us even though we're unavailable since we're playing with our swords. The kicker is that being athletes, we all got great bodies. No wonder they think were gay.

We're no threat, people, we're not dirty, we're not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
    When the weather's fine,
We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea
    We're always happy
Life's for livin', yeah, that's our philosophy

I imagine fencing is just as gay as any sport.

People will always do sports, regardless of their sexuality.
Would you not do football, archery, diving, fencing, hockey, running, cykling, skiing [etc] because you happened to fall in love with people of the same sex..?!

And ls14evar, why not invite your friends for a training session or fencing competition. They can then find out themselves what a cool and non-sissy sport fencing is!
    Fencing is my only PvP.

    Tell them practices are co-ed.

And that there are these tournaments that you go to where sometimes everyone is crammed into the same room...

And then casually introduce them to all the hotties in your club.

Heh... I think with how good I look in my fencing pants, I would have to be anything BUT gay to be caught dead in them.

I've stared at way too many women's a-- in knickers for me to be gay, but like any sport and in real life, there are gay people in fencing, what's the big deal. I think those people who call fencing gay are implying that it is less physical than other sports. Please tell them for me that I've played ice-hockey most my life and football in high-school, fencing is anything but wussy. Besides foil is for lovers
Heaven is where the police are British, the chefs Italian, the mechanics are German, the lovers are French, and its all organized by the Swiss.

They don't understand it. So they feel compelled to make fun of it. So they employ what they believe to be an instant put-down.

Maybe you need a different set of friends--one that respects you more.

Tell them if they are "intrigued" by sweaty men they should check out wrestling. Sweaty guys in spandex with their arms around each other rolling around. When they deny being so intrigued apologize that you "misunderstood" and are supportive of their efforts to find that "special someone."

just tell them that sports like football involve a bunch of sweaty guys piled on top of one another
Fencing is sometimes coed and at practice i certainly spend a good amount of time thrusting into some of my female teammates

: Yeah well, invite you're buddies to fencing practice one time, and show them how hard it is.

But doesn't that just play in to the prejudice/perception that gay men are somehow physically weaker, and poorer athletes, than straight men? Greg Lougainis might dispute that.

I think the better approach is to re-evaluate what kind of people insist on ridiculing your interests if they don't happen to share them. You really want to remain buddies with these guys?

I can see how anyone can say that any sport is homosexual. One, it doesn't make sense physically and that just shows how narrow minded they are. I want to see one of them run up and down a strip in a squatted postion and thrust/cut the oppented and parry. Then take the pain of some touches. Some people shouldn't read a book by its cover, which they are doing.
