Scary scenario, heavily extrapolated:

Election 2000 was not an exception, but the precedent.
Election 2004 follows suit with a long and grueling legal battle over who really "won" the election.
As time goes on and more elections go this way, the president is decided more and more by the courts - primarily, the Supreme Court.
Eventually, the president is selected by the Supreme Court, not elected.
One party controls the Supreme Court...and continually selects corresponding presidents.
Supreme court eventually stops selecting figurehead presidents.
Chief Justice is the new dictator.

Just some long-term conspiracy theory.
