| Apparently (according to my husband who did some training with part of the Chinese foil team, in China, a number of years ago), in 1993 (another World Student Games year, like this year) the Chinese sent their "A" team to the World Student Games and only their "B" team to the World Championships.
In 1993 the two events were much closer together (successive weeks, I think), but most countries (France, Italy etc.) sent their "A" teams to both. So the World Student Games appears to be China's priority (although this was held a couple of months ago and they could have sent their "B" team to the World Championships).
I don't know why their "A" team wouldn't do both in the same year ... rather bizarre.

| yo guys,
the truth about the chinese foil team is that there r the china championships at the same time than the Nimes WC !!!
And, the winner of the china championships wins : "a flat + 1 year of salary " !!!!!!!
thats why china championnships r way much important for the chineses .... so no chinese in Nimes this year |

| If that's true, then why didn't the second-tier fencers who know they have very little chance of winning the China Championships go to Nimes? For the benefit of chinese fencing, it's good to send someone to sort of reconnaissance the fencing scene, see how the referees may be calling things, etc.
Actually, given the low finishes of some of the sabre fencers, I think they did just that.
On the other hand, why in the world did they schedule the China Championships during the same time as the Worlds? It's not as though that scheduling information was given to them later than it was given to everyone else...

| According to the Hong Kong Fencing website, the China National Games (I don't know if that is what you are refering to - it could be something different) isn't until November 11th to 18th.

| It has to be the "9th China National Games" which I found out from the Hong Kong site: web page
Maybe all Chinese fencers rather stay home to prepare for the event. |

| Well the events are close together: it must be quite difficult to fence at the very peak of your abilities for more than one event.

| yeap, sounds logical though, cose winning a flat+1 year salary may need to stay quiet few days before the events !!! cose of course going to WC makes chineses do a long trip + big time difference + obviously fence till semis or finals ---> that way the main team would have been very tired.
and of course if the chinese foil is like the french foil (must be), there r not only 4 very stong guys but maybe 10 to 15 very stong guys who could be in national team, so that the ones staying in china would get an advantage in chinas champ, cose less tired... |
