| In the case of emergency.... In the case that an outbreak of solanum should occur, and the undead are trying to take over, what is your plan? What weapons will you use? What will you do if a friend or loved one contracts the disease?
I'm personally convinced that the best weapon for the job would be an automatic shotgun. I plan to head to high ground (like a skyscraper) and make camp there, while fishing refugees off the street with a rope and pulley system. If a loved one or friend contracted the disease, I believe that the safest and most sterile treatment method would be decapitation, followed by incineration. Have you made plans yet?

| Weapons of choice:
Bolt action rifle (reminds you that every shot counts)
Revolver. (easier to maintain the a semi-auto)
Sawed off shotgun (stopping power and can be helpfull with opening doors)
Machette (blades don't need reloading )
I live in an apartment building so I would first try to salvage anything I can from the first floor and store it on the third. Then I would destroy the stairs on my way up. No stairs, no zombies. If things got too bad I would go up to the roof and hop from roof to roof (many of the building are connected) untill I found a safe place to drop to the street.
I would attempt to contact my friends to figure out a safe place to gather and then head off for the wilderness.

| With the primary damage of zombies coming from teeth and fingernails, ya think we'd all be ok running around in our FIE jackets, just in case?
Another reason to go the extra mile with your equipment maybe, in case of zombie outbreak :P |

When I see Solanum, I think of the scientific name for the genus including potatoes, nightshade, eggplant, and their relatives. An outbreak of eggplants is a truly scary thought. |

Yet another argument for pkt to use in his attempts to convince others to move to his altered LP comfort-fit mask ... |

The virus was named Solanum by the guy who discovered it.
As for what an outbreak of Solanum looks like. Watch "Night of the Living Dead" or go see "Shaun of the Dead" for the best examples.
Other good zombie movies... er... research films:
Dawn of the Dead (both versions)
Day of the Dead
Dead Alive (aka Brain Dead)
28 Days Later (technacly not Zombies but still a good flick)
Resident Evil

| Hey DFP
I would go the whole 'shotgun blow-everyone's-head-off route', but it would probably be more original to take a sharpened epee and see how flechin' the undead does. It would prolly get rather tiring eventually though. By the way, does blood stain epee blades? Do undead bleed?

-matt | The Zombie Survival Guide recomends avoiding foils and epee's since the only way to kill a zombie with one is a direct stab through the eye followed by a quick swirling motion to destroy the brain. They point out that this is extremely difficult. But I'm certain the master fencers here at fencing.net are up to the task.

| Long range:
.338 Lapua Arctic Warefare magnum
Modern German army's mg42 varient. (Can't remember model for the life of me)
Barrett M82A1
Any artillery at hand
Medium Range:
An-94 w/grenade launcher
Short Range:
Any shotgun with either buckshot or flechette rounts (Most preferable 10 or 8 gauge, but 12 would do should none be found)
Glock 18 with LOTS of 31 round mags
Flamethrower
Battleaxe
Sabre, but only if I had horse. :-D
Should a zombie outbreak occur, I think I would just alter the sear on any semi auto gun in sight though - I really don't think government regulations would apply. :-D |

| I'm proud to live in Nevada, a state of crazy, gun wielding wacko's suffering from too much radiation from old nuclear test sites... I know where the guns and ammo are (as well as a fair amount of hidden artillery, grenades, etc) from friends and their relatives. The radiation may really be what starts the outbreak though... so it's into the lions den I go.
Tactical bomb squad gear may be obtained through my best friend's dad (Police Lieutenant whom since we were little kids has shown us every square inch of the armories, storage facilities, and other fun restricted access sites and how to get in/what names to drop to get to him, WHEREVER he may be)
Once again, living in a state full of paranoid delusionals, Bomb shelters with supplies, as well as power facility enough to last for years abound throughout the desert, and I know where the owners to some keep the keys. I'd make it.

| On second thought, My plans for a zombie uprising are to be in a nuclear missile silo in Russia/China/Mysterious US base. Long range anyone? |

| Yep, a silo would be very defendable. Plus, there's nothing around. I don't see zombies crossing long open spaces just for one or two people. |

| I'd use S.Hunter as a shield and throw boomerangs....
On second thought maybe I'd get a colonial gatling gun, those are sick. Or the trusty .357 revolver. |

| I once had a dream in which I was being pursued by zombies. I discovered however that if I just extended my arms, assumed a vacuous expression and said "Braiiiins!" every so often they ignored me as one of their own. Heh, heh, stupid zombies. |
