    Horrible luck in tonights practice!

Ok, to start, my bellguard had started to come loose on my practice Epee. Then...well..then my partner in drilling decided that full strength was needed when doing point control drills on my hand..thus ripping my glove. All of thise stuff came in BF's standard set. Oi. But sewing together my glove and breaking a key to tighten the epee was worth it. However, question..I got this stuff on Thursday. Should it be this frail? It's seen about 15 hours of fencing so far.

do you mean BG's standard set?
practice weapons are a little more frail, and i don't know about the quality of their default glove, but i bet its not as high as it should be. you get what you pay for, and imho i wouldn't buy economy line stuff.

and you should've told your partner to back off on the heavy hitting if it was bugging you

sometimes that just doesn't work and i've been lucky with some economy line practice gear. i've had blades last 4-6 months and one foil blade lasting my first year. sometimes its just luck.

sometimes it doesn't, but if it doesn't, its a problem and it should be dealt with somehow. fencing isn't about beating the crap out of your opponent.

No, Blade-Fencing. I was told by the club that BG is good for the time being, but BF has better quality for the long run. Go figure.

I told him once to back off, and he did, but then 5 sets later, we were back to same ole.

I would call BF, the worst they could say is no, there are no guarantees. The best they could say is we will send you new stuff. It could not hurt, but if you're going to call them you need to do it ASAP.

As a favor can we stop using BF as an abbreviation for Blade? For most people here BF == Blaise Freres, a well-known blade forge in France. C'mon, I KNOW you can stand typing the extra three keystrokes. You even save having to hit shift once. :)

I have been consistantly underwhelmed with the quality to price ratio of Blades (again, please do not mention there house brand stuff in the same breath as BF, one of the best forges in the world). I have been very happy with all the stuff from BG that we have tried except their electric blades.

By the way, the Collegiate Glove that Blade sells (and their other house brand gloves) seem to be the same ones made by a Pakistan vendor named Khalid. He makes nice gloves for the price... but his price is 4 dollars. Five for the nicer washable synthetic ones that blades sells for 25. They are great for a four/five dollar glove but if you paid more than ten you were raped. Invest in a good glove from Uhlmann/Allstar, PBT or Leon Paul (the Fencing Post is a good place to get the Uhlmann/Allstar gloves) and it will last a fair bit longer.

That's exactly the problem, the above posters WEREN'T mentioning Blade in the same breath as BF, they MEAN Blade when they type BF (BF == Blade Fencing for them, rather than Blaise Freres). I'm guessing that they just don't know about BF and so are overloading the initials unintentionally.

Those Khalid gloves are great -- the University of Rochester bought something like 50 (it came out to $4-5/glove, but a significant chunk of that was the wire transfer fee and shipping).

They bleed like crazy for a while, but other than that, they compare pretty well to the Uhlmann gloves. I've gotten addicted to the little grippy things, and the suppleness of the Uhlmann/Allstars, but if you're not incredibly picky about your gear, you can get 10 of them for the price of a single glove.

He is a good guy to work with. He will tell you a minimum order is 150 peices of up to 3 assorted styles and any number of hand/size combos but I have been able to haggle this number a good amount before. Like was said above, for the colored gloves once the bleeding stops they are great gloves that Blade and Physical Chess sell for like 25-30 dollars a pop. I have had a couple of them for like over a year now. They are both getting to the replacement point, but they last about as long as some of Uhlmann gloves, although they do not feel quite as spiff.

As a side note if anyone wants to put together an order but does not need a few hundred gloves laying around, let me and the other folks on fencing.net know. There are enough coachs on here that it should not be a problem for us to come up with the minimum even if Khalid does not feel like haggling at the moment! :-)

I've been meaning to say this for awhile:

BF stands for something else in American slang. And when there's a thread like "Good BF" or "Looking for BF gear", well, it's a little creepy at first.

Just thought I'd let you know now that it's come up.
