| I pay for nothing in fencing.
But all the money I make from working goes directly to college. So in theory, they could pay for college while I pay for fencing. And my fencing stuff would be much nicer, too.
My parents also support my brother and sister. 3 growing fencers in the family can be a real buget drain. We probably spend over $300 a month, with BG stuff. Plus club fees. And alot of tournament fees. (Removing any and all calculations from memory.....done.) |

| Under 21: I pay for everything (fencing). Although if you count the fact that my parents gave me some money for my birthday which went directly into fencing expenses... At least I haven't started competitive fencing. Then life will get expensive. (Oops. That happened before I was born.)

| I'm 16... I work at Wendy's in Olds to pay for all my fees. If I hadn't found fencing I woulda quit a while ago, 7 an hour isnt enough to cover all the bull**** i put up with. Also, there's a 1 1/2 hour drive to calgary 2-3 times a week, once a week during winter, and 4 times a week during spring / summer. I don't have my license yet because my mom wants me to go through drivers training first... until then I'm lucky enough to have my gas costs covered for me. |

| I put Over 21, pay for my own fencing. Really, I can't afford new equipment at this point, and I'm just praying that nothing breaks, because recently I can't afford to replace things either.
As to the second part: how does your financial situation affect your fencing... it makes me bitter and resentful and means that I weigh all competitions against whether I can afford them. |

That said, this is a choice that I, also, routinely make. But it's not a simple no-brainer by any stretch.

This also happens to quite a few of the upper level fencers. They have to weigh and choose what competitions they will attend according to their finances. Often a lack of money keeps fencers off teams. Fencers with excellent financial backing have a better chance in making teams if they can attend every event. Those points add up.
Some fencers have grandparents willing to support their fencing habits. It can be a difficult situation especially due to the travel involved.
Hang in there Anna.

-B | I gave up doing it when I tore my calf in my first bout the day after refereeing all day.

| I have two sons that fence and have picked up bills since they were 9 & 11. The older one is now 25 and pays his way, I still help the younger one 22 who is still at uni. High point was the eldest ones first Cadet World Championship - you met your own bills 100% to represent your country (oh! not quite right, they provided a single badge for the tracksuit). Are other National fencing teams centrally funded or not - I know the French teams are fully funded. |
