| Long Beach Invitational first day results 88 fencers in the Open Mixed Foil. Cedric Anen won 15-10 against Alex Decker. Josh Lepold and Emerson DiNapoli tied for third. Other in top-8 were Brian Fraser, Torrey Burgess, Yann Staelens, Wes Bellanca.
Open Women's Epee was won by Alexandra Mummery (earns A04) who defeated Elizabeth Spilman. Tied for third were Valerie Chan (B04) and Daisy Flores. Don't know about the rest of the final 8.
Open Women's Saber was won by Tsvetslina Bakalova. Jennifer Lobato (Sonora, Mexico) was second. Carolina Merz and Laura Johnson were third. Rounding out the rest of the top 8 were Liz Enochs, Jeannette Strumillo, Liz Earls and Lozano of San Diego.
That's all we got. I'm currently enjoying the nice party after the first day of competition. Then, it's off to a nice steak.
Tomorrow will include OMxE, OWE, OWF. I'm doing the epee.

| I ended up refereeing the fnals of the women's saber, as I didn't fence the foil event.
I did fence the open mixed epee on Sunday and made top-32. OMxE had 107 fencers. Was rather happy with the results.

| Second day's (partial) results:
WF: Jade Falcon won, defeating Margaret Fagan (I think). Can't tell you who the rest of the top-8 were.
MxS: Josh Runyan, Eric Momberg, Torrey Burgess, Locky Stewart in the top-4. Others include DeLa Torre from Mexico (def by Momberg), Eric Wang (def by Runyan), Bret Martin (by Stewart), and someone else.
MxE: Kip Cox defeated Michael Pearce for the gold. Lichten and Caswell(?) were third. Otra Olver, Herrod (from Utah), and two others were in the final 8.
I lost to Herrod when (1) he switched from a pistol grip to a french grip and (2) I continued to attack him when I was ahead 6-3. In epee, DON'T attack when you're ahead. That was a strategic no-no. He got three unanswered points to tie, and then I had to out fight him and didn't. He then beat Carl Loeffler to make the top-8.

| Just a small correction, Jenny Lobato who won the silver in Women's saber is from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Club Esgrima Vallarta, and Jorge De La Torre who lost to Momberg 15-14 is from that same club too. That Momberg-De La Torre match was probably the most exciting of the mixed saber event, close all the way down to the wire. Saw some great fencing there.
The tournament was VERY VERY well run, kudos to the organizers! Super touch was the free massage to all entered fencers. Great granite rocks w/cool medal inset for trophies. Edew did a great job ref-ing |

| meal review Forgot to mention: the food at the venue was all right. Nothing to write home about.
Dinner was at Reef Restaurant. Hard to get to (go to the Queen Mary Way and get onto Harbor Scenic Drive), but worth the visit. There were several wedding ceremonies (which we eschewed to crash), and a fairly packed house.
The appetizer my fellow fencer and I chose was not that great: reef oysters with some sort of cheese topping. The cheese overtook the oyster. My garden salad was also so-so.
However, my entree, a prime rib with mash potatoes and string beans was delicious. We brought our own Stags Leap wine for the dinner and that was equally enjoyable.
While not at the level of the Kendall-Jackson duck, the entree here was well worth the visit.

| The other item that should be noticed was it was light out both days. Armorers are not use to such short hours. I do want to acknoledge the Armory staff I had. There was very few equipment problems and they were solved quickly. I couldn't have found a better staff and a thank you to the organizers to allow such a large staff.
On Sunday, over 100 Epeeist, with 100% going up from the pools and finished in less than 8 hours.
