Wireless?

Either my french really sucks, or Estoc has a 3-weapon wireless system on the market. To quote Mr. Lucas, "My lord, is that.... legal?" Looks nifty, though.

It is a 3-weapon wireless, but the Foil is without the white light. That is what is holding it up. It is also NOT legal for competition. It uses RF. It says it is secure, but as far as the FIE is concerned. They would trust it.

Again, my middle school french may be failing me, but I translated "Fleuret avec ou sans les blanches!" as "foil with or without the white lights", which seems to imply that it has a dual mode for the lights. Clarify last two sentances?

You are right. I rushed looking at it. With the RF, it looks like it is possible. They haven't been successful without it, except the St. George experiment, but that used the piste as a translater.

I should look more closely next time. Thank you for the catch.

So what has happened with this?? It does look pretty nifty, & according to the picture on the bottom of the page, it was demoed at the 2003 Nationals in Austin, Texas. Has anyone here seen or used this system? Were there some clear technical problems, or is it very costly?

Rukovsoft on the French form www.escrime-info.com gives the most in-depth review of the product based on his experience with it at a tournament in Bourges:

http://www.escrime-info.com/modules/...08&forum=17&14

- systeme adapte a l'escrime handisport

CONCLUSION

I really wonder how this is possible. Can someone knowledgeable explain how this works? How does grounding work for epee? How does the machine tell the difference between on and off target in foil?

Here is my the very spotty machine translation which I tried to clean up as best I can:

-----------------------------------

Re: Wireless epee: my opinion after testing

I had the chance to try out this system at the "Duo of Solo of Bourges" this Sunday before the semi-final. It should be made clear that there are 2 systems out there: the Ukrainian system, which you saw with the sabre at the Olympic Games (and which does not function apart from this weapon) and the system I tried out, which is manufactured under a French brand. This French brand has this system as its emblem and slogan. Sold in France and in the USA, it has an unquestionable interest. I thus WILL INFORM you OBJECTIVELY and will give you for and it against on this product, having had the chance to test it.

SECURITY
First of all I have to say that on this forum or on others there is a lot of talk about the problem of security. I do not think that it is the largest "disadvantage" of this system. Far from it. Indeed, to pirate this system it would be necessary to lay out of a little more apparatuses than just a simple portable or PDA. The system is protege(?) and encrypted. Moreover, (if one believes?) the statements of the manufacturer (who explained the technical aspect of his product for 30 minutes), the system has a double protection, which enables him to change the frequency often.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
First of all the system goes against the current of what has been made until out of matter of electrification. They have revamped the circuit system... which requires some adjustments...

The system runs on all 3 weapons. One thus chooses his weapon on which one places a specific point has the place of his good old woman tip point. With the epee this tip is "longer", but not harder. I do not have tests the foil.

It rests on a double system of sliding motion, which makes it possible to avoid has the epee to make mass.

For the foil in addition to that, one needs a special glove with metal, which makes it possible to restore the insulation of a metalic track. I will speak about it below.

It's necessary then put on a special wire. The end which is put in the epee is put there. The other end different. It is a serial port (COM), as on an old PC.

This cable end connects to a small light case which one puts in his back pocket. After manufacturer, is has the study another attachment unit for the trousers without pockets.

These modules, one for each competitor, communicate with the apparatus. This last allows up to 2 matches at the same time, and is not larger than a classical device.

THE APPEAL OF THE PRODUCT
- saves the cost of purchase of a metalic track to the foil and the sabre.
- allows fencing in places not intended for fencing
- the system adapts to the fencing handisport
- easy to set up, therefore useful in schools, COSEC and any place not designed for the practice of the fencing...

POSITIVE POINTS
- simple system has to set up not longer to connect than the traditional system
- feeling of freedom: the competitor is no longer attached to a reel!
- little to allow has my direction to make some economies although I do not know the of the aforesaid cost materiel
- lifespan of the 100 hour old batteries
- adaptable system easily for the 3 weapons and securise.

NEGATIVE POINTS
- impossible to whip with this type of point
- what do you do if the module breaks down, or the battery is emptied: annul touches???
- it doesn't allow the metallic piste to be replaced in epee!

CONCLUSION
So those are for my impressions. in any case let us salute the manufacturer for the inovation of his product. To rethink the "electric" system and to offer a product innovation, about which many people speak, of Europe in the USA, it is a beautiful achievement...

****-a-doodle-doo, all the more it is a French company.

So it sounds like it needs a different type of longer epee tip.

In the thread they go on to discuss two-on-two fencing, etc. and rukovsoft says this type of match is very popular in the USA.

Yeah, I saw this in Texas. IIRC, the tip is nearly 1cm longer than normal. I really wonder how reliable it is...
