Milanoli Il Campione del Mondo 2001

Milanoli takes the first WCh individual épée gold for Italy in years. Milanoli finally has a result which equals his flamboyance!!!!

He took out Fabrice Jeannet in the quarterfinals (no small feat F. Jeannet has been hot).

And, as no surprise, Vezzali repeats in WF.

BTW has anyone else been having problems connecting to www.escrime2001.com? It's been very erratic for me today.

Me too. Completely unable to access the site. Could there be too much traffic on that site? Could there be millions of people around the world wondering what's happening in the fencing scene instead of checking on CNN.com or talibanwatch.com?

Good for Milanoli. I love the guy. He's got balls galore, and his flamboyance is a great watch. Another third-place for france, eh? (dig, dig).

    How did Hansen do?

Good for Vezzali, too, although it would be nice to see someone else up there. Did she have her red hair, or did she dye it something else? Anyone know?

I think the mask is what won it for him. Imagine this flying down the strip at you:

    Sorry, I can't be stopped.

BTW, Hansen went out in the round of 64. He finished 36th overall.

Cody Mattern was 85th. Rashaan Greenhouse was 65th. Nathaniel Burke was 75th.

I think he meant me. I received an error response everytime I tried to submit, saying the CGI can't handle the load. Or something like that. Webmaster, feel free to delete redundant messages.

I'm not trying to bump up my Galaga points.

    Eric,

You're right. As soon as I posted it I realized that he was referring to you.

I'm just so excited about the Italians finally producing, I thought he was referring to my multi-post fan deluge.

The french might be getting medals, but it's the italians who are bringing home the gold: Men's Foil, Men's Epee, Women's Foil. Half of the events are won by italians. Not bad. The other three by Russia, Germany, and France.

And did Milanoli *really* wear that mask? I looked at the Eurosport site (go to the italian language localization) and it also showed that picture. I'm amazed that the FIE would allow that to go on. I mean, even the PFL/WFF didn't have masks that elaborate/(er, loud).

I think they stuck that on him afterwards although i think i read that he initially came to the strip with it on.

A photo from the bout says he didn't use it:

No, Milanoli didn't wear his painted mask during the competition fights themselves (he wore a plain blue meshed mask). Oh I love Eurosport... :-)

Nice to see Golubitsky presiding Attely's semi-final fight in the men's foil: one president that I doubt many people would argue with...
