| It's not like I suddenly lost all my masculinity- except I do find the sudden urge to wear a sweater, drink diet coke, and fence foil. |

| Westly, female fencers are always told to wear breast protectors, and they do it. With male fencers, it's recommended, but I don't know any male fencers that wear them. No doubt it would have hurt, but you should have always been wearing a box.

Hi--following your conversation about equipment and amusement about
protection. I'm a 45 year old Mother of 1 who just took up fencing this
year after watching my son long enough. I not only bought the best
equipment I could afford, I am the only person I know who fences epee with
shin guards under my socks. That was after the first time I fenced epee
in a tournament and a fellow student wanted to practice with me, he hit my
leg and drew blood through the sock--so from now on shin guards.
I even was hit by a beginning foil fencer in a tournament who squatted and ran his foil into my internal genital area--I had to leave to go to the
Doctor for an internal exam and antibiotics. I actually thought about
wearing the women's hockey cup I saw for sale. But I figure that was a
once in a lifetime experience.
Don't feel silly at all--it is your body, and you want to enjoy fencing.
You need the confidence of being safe. What can we say about where
someone else draws the line about their safety.
Good luck and good fencing!

So, this applies to both genders.
Have a nice time, and donīt win the Darwin Awards!

| I swear I saw a WE fencer at the olympics wearing a shinguard on her front leg. It dosn't seem that bad of an idea, actually. Personally, though, I just make sure I don't get hit there. Hits should hurt. It reminds you not to do the stupid things. |

| I have heard that soccer shin guards are useful for epeeists. I'm not an epeeist, just a sabreur, and thusly, better then you! *lol*

| A shin guard is not a bad idea - but probably has a high wuss factor associated with it. Also - you show up to bout with shin protector is like saying: " I get hit there so often I need protection since I cannot defend a low attack." Then again a typical double-thinking epeeist may conclude: "they want me to think they have no low defence when they really do, so I'll feint low and go high" which of course leads to " I know you think you know what I think I know..."
Actually if there's a part of the leg that needs protection more then the spot where both legs meet, its got to be the front knee cap. A hit to the shin will be painful but a hit to the knee cap could be destructive. |

It's f-l-a-u-n-t
not f-l-a-n-t
'Cause Flant sounds like flat... and that's not good.
