Some countries are recognized by some countries but not by other countries. The numbers range from like 175-250, depending on how you count it and stuff. |

| The only real definitive way would be to count up the UN delegates. Even then you're gonna be off cause there's a few that have no UN representation. The DPRK has full representation in the UN though.

| I feel that the thread has gone in the wrong direction. The point of it was to see in what parts of the world children are taught that there are 5 or 7 continents. I was born in Ecuador and I was taught that there were 5 Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and America. When I came to the US I was taught that there were seven.
I have heard that in some parts of Europe they also consider there to be 5 continents. |

| I can't remember if Taiwan does or not. I believe they do, but with China securing a much larger presence in the UN (and just in general) it's only a matter of time before the Chinese do manage to "reclaim" all of them. The problem for Taiwan is that unlike Israel the US and all the US allies, we are cozying up to their enemy. We defend Israel against it's enemies cause we feel bad for the Israelis (we sent a lot of Jews back to Hitler instead of letting them into the US). But as far as Taiwan is concerned we would much rather maintain peaceful relations with China cause China will in the next century most likely eclipse us as the dominant force in the world.

| Yes i know the "5" but what are the other 2 then if there are 7? i know that India is like a sub-continant and New Zealand has a continental shelf does that count? makes it 7.

| In the United States, we are taught 7 continents:
Europe
Asia
Africa
North America
South America
Australia
Antarctica
However, any cursory glance at a globe reveals that Europe/Asia are in fact one continuous/contiguous landmass, and therefore should only be a single continent--"Eurasia", or something like. This would reduce the number to 6.
There was some debate in my youth as to whether or not Australia was "big enough" to warrent the lable of continent in its own right, but that seems to be accepted practice today.
