Obituary: Greg Mueller

I recieved this from a friend in my old fencing club today.

He loved the sport. It was his one, constant solace.

**********************************************

The IFC received the sad news that Greg Mueller passed away last Sunday. Following is the obituary from the October 6 South Bend Tribune. Our condolences go out to all of Greg's family and friends.

South Bend Tribune

William G. Mueller
Aug. 31, 1947 -- Oct 3, 2004

William Gregory Mueller, 57, of Eaglewood Drive, Granger, Ind., passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, in Noblesville, Ind. Mr. Mueller was a professor at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1947, in South Bend, Ind., to Jack Landis Mueller and Rosemary (Erler) Mueller Ward, and lived in this area most of his life. He was preceded in death by his father in 2003.

Greg is survived by his son, Greg Mueller II of South Bend; his mother, Rosemary (Jerry) Ward of Granger; a stepdaughter, Rachel Darr of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Judy (Larry) Shaw of Elkhart, Ind.; a stepsister, Lacey Mueller of Granger; two brothers, Christopher (Evelyn) Mueller of Warsaw, Ind., and Jack (Korina) Mueller of Granger; and a stepbrother, Landis Mueller of Granger.

Mr. Mueller graduated from John Adams High School, where he was selected as a national finalist in the Westinghouse Science Fair for his engineering of a heart and lung machine. He received a bachelor of science degree in philosophy and his master's degree in hospital administration from Indiana University. Greg had a lifelong passion for fencing. He captained the Indiana University fencing team and was also an assistant fencing coach at the University of Notre Dame. His love of fencing took him to Europe to compete for the United States Army on the U.S. Pentathalon team.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial gathering in the home of Martyn and Kathleen Wills from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Greg's memory to S.O.S. Foundation at Madison Center, 403 E. Madison St., South Bend, IN 46617. S.O.S. Foundation assists victims of assault and domestic violence.

Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, South Bend, is assisting the family with arrangements.
