The Pistol Grip

Whats the difference between an insulated and a non-insulated pistol grip? And is Visconti a good pistol grip brand? Let me know. Thx. -Ryan

The insuation's just a layer of paint, nothing fancy. You could ground out you opponent's hit on older boxes by placing your grip against your lame when you got naild if the grip was bare metal, hence the insulation requirement. Modern boxes take this into account, so insulation's not necessarry, although grips are often painted to color code sizes or just for looks.

Visconti is a grip style, not a company, and there are several variations of the grip. It's the most popular grip out there, but I personally prefer the Belgian.

the lack of paint/insulation is also a key factor in epee, where the grip should not count as a point (if you hit an uninsulated grip, it grounds out, if its insulated, it registers a touch).

as mentioned earlier, visconti is a style and i personally prefer uhlmann visconti grips and anything else is just not quite the same.

Insulated grips are required at foil, although not necessarily enforced.

As stated above, it is a disadvantage to have your grip insulated at epee

Visconti isn't a brand of grip, its like a common template/mould that any company can produce. They do look slightly different from company to company, but the jist is the same. I think its a good pistol grip to start with, but I prefer a belgian grip me self.

I've basically only fenced with Visconti...ever...The only thing was at my last club meeting a guy showed me his Russian grip...the thing is really clunky feeling...Except that the extra weight in the grip balances the sword moreso that the tip feels lighter and it's easier to swing that point around...Pretty cool I thought.

it's the next best thing to a french grip.

I use a Zivkovic K grip, I like it, but then again i am crazy. It requires getting use to, as it has a paddle instead of a pommel kind of thing on all of the other orthopedic grips. you really have to use it like it's a French, with the manipulator fingers.
