| problem with epee tip My epee tip was only registering part-time, and only with a hard hit, so I took it apart and noticed that it was very difficult to push the tip down.
I cleaned it out, and still, even cleaned out, it was not an easy glide down to the base. The tip was not crunchy, but it was a very difficult travel. Then, I tested the wires, which came back lifeless, so I dremmeled them out. The tip, however, is still weird in that it would be a tough hit to make it work. Any ideas on why? |

| Well, I'm partial to to Uhlman, and a friend who travels to Germany regularly gets me my parts, so I hope I can rule out the incompatibility. |

| Besides the dent, which happens less than the Foil, check the slots. You will sometimes find after a hard hit, 2 things happen a gouge occurs in the slot and a small burr around the screwhole of the tip. Take a round jewelers file to the slots, also making sure they are 180 degrees and a flat to the tip around the screw holes.

| One last question then - if I check all these things, and I can't seem to find anything, or even if I do, does that mean that I throw the tip out? Generally, I'm not hard on my stuff. I can't remember the last time I had to get rid of any of my parts (which could in itself be the problem).
If one fences approximately 3-4 times a week and lends equipment out to others, would it seem reasonable to have an epee go up in 6 months? |

| For me no. You might be throwing out a perfectly good tip and it might be something else. I would want to find out why. Does another tip work? Does is work without screws? There are so many variables. Before I throw anything out, I make sure it is the problem and is unrepairable.

| I wanted to thank you....I took the tip apart (and I'll admit I was ready to throw the darn thing out), checked the holes like you said, scrubbed out the inside of the barrel with emery paper, cleaned it, re-assembled it, and voila! The action of the point was smoothe and unobstructed - like new! And to think I almost destroyed a perfectly good German tip..... |
