Delia won her sabre event. I got seriously thumped in every DE bout I fenced. Mostly due to my own stupidity. I hate to think of how many times I have told people "don't think about the next bout untill this one is over." but do I listen to myself? Nope. Sigh....

Yeah, I won the 50+ WS, and did better in the IA WS than I hoped despite the wear and tear of this year (I was 13th). Susan Cox won it and I congratulated her. She said, "For winning and being a grown-up?" which was exactly the point. Actually, there was an over-40 in the top 8 of the I-A, the athletic Lydia Mazorol. The Division II final 8 in the WS was all 18 or under, mostly extremely under.

Our loopy Philadelphia Division composite team, seeded 11th out of 15, actually made it out of the first round, defeating our first opponent, Virginia Academy of Fencing, which was seeded 6th! This is far more surprising than it sounds: We were made up of a tired 50-year-old (me), a 40+ with severe elbow tendonitis (Rosemary), a 16-year-old who is competent but inexperienced (Carrie), and a woman in her late 20s who fences all three weapons and nobody knows what to do with her because her style was so unusual (Pixie)! VAF had the incredible Carolyn Wright, the very strong vet Deb Stopak, and an over-50 who had good form and knew what to do. Our secret ace was the 3-weapon Pixie, who looked as if you could hit her easily but had a lovely late riposte, so we were ten points ahead by the last bout and I only had to make 5 against Carolyn Wright's 10 (she made 6). We were jumping up and down and doing a group hug afterwards. It was hilarious.

Then we got knocked out by the eventual 2nd place team, Lilov, but we scared them enough that their coach was seriously annoyed and brought in their best fencer, whom he was saving for the "important" bouts. For anyone who was there, we were the women's open sabre team that was screaming and carrying on and could be heard all over the venue on Wednesday. Salle d'Escrime won. Philadelphia Division Composite, however, I think gets the prize for having the most fun.

Officially introduced myself to oiuyt so there's at least ONE more person who knows me.

I am not injured, much! Huzzah. Having survived this year I'm going to take off a few weeks from fencing and treat my joints with respect.

Hmmm . . . good question. Rise when they enter the room and take your hat off? Hold the door open for them, definitely. Call them "sir" and "ma'am." Introduce them to strangers (have you met my elbow?).

What I mean is I'm taking up bicycling instead of jogging, doing some light weights to strengthen the muscles around the joints, and not doing any plyometrics or other things young people can get away with. Also buying some more ice packs and plunging the back foot into ice water up to the calf after I cycle.

I heard that the Northern California composite Under-19 women's foil team won the gold medal, defeating the likes of either FC or Rochester (i.e., either the Emily Cross/Jessica Florendo/... group or the Thompson twins group).

    That's semi-substantiated, but more news when I get'em.

The Northern California composite is comprised of Ali Glasser, Katie Hancock, Doris Willette and Mina Zargham. Go going!

Rochester FC beat NYFC in the semi-final of the women's event by somewhere around 10. It would have been quite a bit more, but Kelsey Finkel's flick looks pretty nice.

Emily Cross, Jessica Florendo and the Thompson twins didn't represent either club, instead the teams were from the next generation of foilists.

We lost to the NorCal composite in the final by 5 or 6. It was close, but Doris Willette closed out Adi Nott well.

Next year, when our girls start growing, then you guys are in trouble...
