| What is up with screaming? Today when I went to a tournament, like..50% of everyone if they hit, BAM they were screaming, shrieks, "hurrahs" "yes" "****" and stuff in other languages, I realized it's supposed to be for "intimidation" and swaying the judges, but I think it's plain rediculous, especially with the girls sabre, they would hit and then go to the other girl's face and scream, and one of them squatted down as she screamed and fell over! I mean come on, I think it'd rude, and the guy who did it when I was fencing, he MISSED and screamed so I got a nice mask touche, well, smash, to his face which he didn't scream thereafter. I hate it when people do that, it's so..unsportsman like. (atleast in my opinion) and since there are so many I can GURANTEE there are a bunch of screamers who roam this board and I'm curious to see what they'll say. |

| They are just pathetic excuses for people who like to try and influence the judges in any manner. I'm gonna get hit hard here for this - But fencing should be one sport where respect is shown, and thats not respect in any way. People really should grow up and learn to wait for the referee to decide on a touch - Its incredibly childish to scream for it. |

| I personally think that if it helps you fence better, and gets you pumped up, then why not? Sure, it's not for everyone. But when I am fencing a tough bout, or even when I just want to do well in pools to get a good place in the D.E.'s I let out some screams and yells. It helps get me into it.
*roar*
Also... not all screams are there for the director. I don't think I ever scream to "influence the director."

| Go back to the thread about it - read it - realize that it's not unsportsmanlike as a general rule. |

| grunting supposedly puts 4% more power behind whatever you're doing. Screaming is maybe another version of that.

| I don't think that a small "to yourself and inside your head" scream is ok but I have seen some folks get way carried away. I also believe that a yell in anothers face is unsportman like conduct. |

Different creature entirely.
I too think they're ludicrous and annoying, but what can you do? Not really unsportsmanlike in most cases, just stupid. |

| More that "unsporstman lke" I would call it just "unelegant" and "unmannered"...
But, this is the 21st century. Manners and culture are, unfortunately, rare tarding goods these days...

| well, i havent been know to scream during a fencing bout, and as i havent been in many comps at all, have never really faced an opponent who has, plus my coach would kill me if i tried...
but that seems a little bit ridiculous :P and screaming into their face, if thats not unsportsmanlike, i duno what is.

| hmm, i'm an avid screamer, and when i first saw it at a tournament, i rolled my eyes and thought "what's his problem?" about a year later, I saw my first dose of "uber high calibre" fencing. Almost everyone yelled. I was watching these bouts to pick up tips and tactics, to emulate them. I just decided "hey, i think i'll try that yelling thing." I must admit, for me (and this is specific to me though it may be for others as well) it brings a certain intensity to the bout that seems to make me fence very well. I tell people that they wouldn't understand the scream part until they've fenced hard enough for that one touch to let one out. I mean, is it a combat sport or is it a combat sport? I've never premeditated a scream in a tournament--I only picked up the habit at practice, and it carried into the tournament. While it does sound funny, (I somehow picked up the classical fencing "kiai" without hearing it before--things like "EY-LAH" and other such nonsense) I like to watch someone who does do it fence. It is not a measure of their ability IMHO, just their intensity. It's like our version of Bruce Lee's growl! This DOES NOT MEAN IF YOU DON'T SCREAM YOU'RE NOT INTENSE!!! It's not for everyone, yes it does seem silly, and my friend who was watching the Olympics was like "do they have to scream after every touch? I replied "yes...yes they do." But some don't and own people anyways.
It WOULD sound stupid everyone just said "yay" or "yes" after each hit. Like an Herbal Essence commercial LOL
One of them squatted down and screamed and fell over? Wait--can you imagine how she must feel? To me, that's fantastic! Yes i would laugh and yes it would look silly, but screw us! We didn't score that touch, she did! That isn't gamesmanship, to me that's pure effort followed by celebration.
Fencing is SO friggin' institutional...don't get me wrong, I LOVE it, it is my one and only and all that, but the rigidity of the etiquette and the uniform and the play field and so on. I mean, who's complained about the "stigma" of fencing being for stuffy rich Europeans? there was an article two issues i think ago in American Fencer about the proposed rules changes appealing to spectators and how breaking up the celebration of a victory so the handshake could take place neutered the experience for everyone including the spectators. i don't think screaming is actually unusual--i think it just sticks out like a sore thumb against the backdrop of fencing itself. Those who have a "real" problem with screaming, not just those who are merely annoyed by it, i have a feeling had a "real" problem with Mia Hamm's celebration where she tore her shirt off, and scoff when an announcer goes "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL" over and over again and so on... but i could be wrong.
and you may be thinking "yes but.... every damn touch?" Of course! what other sport can you (literally) fight that hard over and over and over again??? fencing is awesome like that. Y'know what annoys me more? When people hit homeruns and walk out of the box instead of running. It's like looking at the scoring box in fencing. THAT'S showing off. It may be neither here nor there, but encouraging screaming would do a lot more to "fix" (what needs fixing?) fencing than box timings or rules changes.
so there
peace
