Hopefully, these videos are fairly representative of each of the respective games. Please note the titles are not of my choosing and in the majority of cases the videos get more interesting after the half way point and the music may be questionable. Best Counter Strike movie 4 ever part 1/2 Quake 3 Arena - Fatal1ty Vs Aim Voo vs. d.medic (Painkiller video) Why Quakeworld is better than any other FPS
It is probably fair to say that if these videos are taken as examples of expert play (ie, best players in real matches) then the following remarks may be made:
Counterstrike appears to have simplest maps utilitising the simplest hitscan weapons with the simplest physics. Lots of line of sight events with little overall movement.
Quake 3 has slightly more complex maps and utilises intermediate movement but the relative openness and use of some hitscan weapons simplifies the playing style by emphasising line of sight events.
Painkiller has greater complexity in its maps, movement physics and is noticably faster than q3.
Quakeworld has the most complex maps, movement physics, mix of weapons and overall speed.
Personally, I liked QW the best (no surprises, eh Shi no Tenshi ) and personal preferences aside, the facts are it's the hardest and most brutal game out of the lot. That is not to say it is superior in terms of 'funness', as acheiving flow in hard games is very dependent on appropriate opponents. As I no longer play these games, it ought to be accepted there will be a certain amount of rose-tinted bias involved, however, the information above is hopefully fair and I hope you enjoy whatever you play.

Array You have never played TF2? Sinner.
Basically, as I am seeing it, you prefer the tactics of movement over the tactics of placement. In QW, you use one weapon over the others, and have to know it's qualities the best: the rocket launcher. The others are horrendously specific in their application, and the lightning gun is a short range insta-hit. It does take longer to kill, but if you catch somebody in the air, they can't do a whole lot about it. And, for the most part, anybody that had a quad used a shotgun, for it's instant hit properties. Basically, that tells me the players would chose insta-hit weapons if they did more damage. So while yes, the game's layout does encourage you to take calculated risks with ranged weapons, and you memorize the map to know your placement, it still emphasizes one weapon. And players choose other weapons when they have the option. The grenade launcher was only used when somebody was being very predictable.
I would have to say Q3A requires the best mastery of all weapons.
And in all honesty, Painkiller seems to be the biggest pissing match. But I've heard it has a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning!

You are correct, I prefer the 'tactics of movement' over the erm, 'tactics of not moving'. Never mind, this was cathartic, cheers
edit: since you are a bit of a player of games, you might want to check out Go. Oldest game in the world, easy to pick up how to play 9x9 games, near infinite learning curve, etc, etc. Head over to www.gokgs.com for a look at one of the better servers and senseis.xmp.net is an excellent resource. I'm reading and working through www.361points.com which might be interesting for a particular female player's perspective.
