Array Offset French Grip? I recently saw a french grip that was bent down and to the left, instead of the usual bend outward from the wrist. Does anyone know what grip this is and where you can find it? Hateful to me as the gates of Hades is that man who hides one thing in his heart and speaks another. ~Homer

Array This is most likely a bend in the tang and not a property of the grip itself. Thusly, any weapon may be customized in that fashion. The only way to atone for being occasionally a little over-dressed is by being always absolutely over-educated. -Oscar Wilde -

By the way Epictetus, where did you see that? Because, I've never seen someone using the same bend... -

Array Is this bend of the tang somewhere along the threads or where the guard is located (meaning the grip can slide on and off)? -

I'm right handed so the guard is on the left side of my hand. Even if my tang is bent down and to the left (it's not extrem, there's a rule for that!), I can use my grip close to the bell or from the pommel...
I hope it helps a bit. -

I took the question to mean is the tang of your weapon bent only near the guard so a straight handle mounted on it can slide easily on or off, or do you put a bend in the grip/handle as well? Since you mentioned using a wood handle I'd guess you have the first case.
Some others put bends in their french grips not just at the tang, but also in the grip itself. Those handles are usually rubber and don't just slide off because of the bend farther down. You have to unbend them first before trying to remove the handle. -

My leon paul epee came with the grip already nicely bent at the tang. Don't know if other manufacturers offer this when you order a new weapon. The proper cant makes a world of difference when you pommel w/ the french grip. -

Array Same with mine. My new StM foil felt awkward and heavy until our amourer bent the tang. Now it feels balanced and wonderful. -

Array It's sort of embarassing, but I can't even hold an uncanted French grip any more. It's just...all CRAZY feeling.... I used to love the Italian grip ,but I'll have to get my hand surgically altered to use one again.
I asked about the bend in the lower tang because I've seen people bend the tang at the bottom of the grip so the pommel nut is skewed off to the side. Now, THAT looks strange!!! -

Array But very good for pommeling, if I take your meaning correctly. The only way to atone for being occasionally a little over-dressed is by being always absolutely over-educated. -Oscar Wilde -

Array True. This kid at the club thinks it's cool, and who can argue with personal preference, but I keep reminding him that he has to "UNBEND" the thing to work on it and I've noticed him complaining...but they live and learn.
