Suv's are the worst thing on the planet. They're big, they use a lot of gas, and they're relatively expensive to build. The most amount of accidents in the united states is from SUV crashes, not because there are more SUVs than regular cars, but because driving an SUV gives you false confidence. They use up a lot of gas, and if there were no SUVs right now we might not be in iraq right now (some say... ). Imagine how much the oil industry was getting when gas price per gallon was near $3.00. I don't know how many gallons it takes to fill up an SUV, but it can't be under 20 gallons... but i might be wrong there.
Blah beddie times for me.
'night brats!

| If you don't have a genuine need for one (i.e., don't have a 6+ person family and/or tow large loads), but still want to throw your money away on gas and the huge profit margin car companies make on them, well it's a free country. My '99 A4 Avant 2.8 quattro will haul all my fencing gear (plus 6-7 strips worth of scoring equipment), get me through any snowstorm that a sane person has any business driving through, and still get better mileage (AND be a h*ll of a lot more fun on the twisty roads ).

| I live in a family of six, we had one but man it guzzled gas like nothing before... over fifty dollars to fill the tank and not even fully! Minivans are the way to go.

| Those big car things that you see mum's dropping their kids of to school in. Y'know the ones - they look like tanks. Some people over here call them an MPV [don't know why]. I think they are a disgrace. |

(Winter's comming, the snow is already creeping down the mountians and nighttime temps have been in the high 20'sF, -4C)
New York City? That's another thing. |

New York City? That's another thing. | Ah, but gav and I are from the UK, so he speaks from our pov. It is admittedly colder up in Scotland than in London (which makes the concept of the kilt all the weirder) but still, most people don't need an SUV (I'd call it a 4 x 4 , pronounced four by four, or an MPV) - especially not to drop the children off at school. Four wheel drive necessary on the South Circular? I think not. And a hill farmer's 4 x 4 is never that shiny...
The other thing I call this type of vehicle is a "posh mummy car". Driven (in the south east, at least) by posh mummies, with velvet alice bands, to ferry their precious darlings to private school/extra french lessons/exclusive ballet classes etc.
Thanks also to Inq for the nice pictures.

| They're full acronym should be SUVI (Stupid Useless Vanity Item). Touted for the Urban "Warriors" who need a low mile per gallon vehicle with the 4 wheel drive capability to go off road. My friend had one with a V6 engine, WTF!!?? If you're going to buy a glam item put out the cheddar and pimp it up to a full 8 blazin cylinders, loser....
Statistically, SUV owners have a 10% greater chance of dying in a car accident (tendency to roll over) and SUVs tend to 'cause greater damage in non-one car accidents (higher bumpers). But they're cool so people have been eating them up until recently. Personally, if it didn't hurt the economy so bad, I'd like to see gas hit $4.00 a gallon, serve those people right...

New York City? That's another thing. | That's another matter. If you have the need, you can drive a Snow Cat around for all I care. It's the people who buy them because everyone else is that kill me...

I'm lucky if I can get a better price than 80 pence a litre, which is my various conversions are correct, is about $5.75 a gallon... It has a rather high excise duty, does fuel.

| Is ballet really considered posh? And French? My family is posh in no ways. Yet, we do those things. But we don't have a SUV. I hate HUMMERS, oh my gosh, I wan to kill them all. There is absolutely no reason to own one. They're ugly and expensive. They're boxes on wheels. Whooo, ingenius, I say. *rolls eyes*

My mum and I did ballet for a long time, too... ballet rocks!
