In case there is any confusion:

DAY 1 is Saturday Oct. 23, for D & under fencers. DAY 2, Sunday Oct. 24 is for C & above fencers. Top 8 finishers from DAY 1 can fence DAY 2 for no additional fee.

    Also:
First place wins $300, plus $300 for highest place of their gender, so first place is $600.

Yup... And if you exceed all expectations, place in the top eight, you will earn a rating and be given a free entry to the second day, where...well.... you will get to see a whole other level of fencing. Last year's second day was roughly equivalent to a Div 1A competition.

yes... but only epee these days. But I did fence the GALA the past two years. First year it was my third or fourth competition ever. I won one DE. Last year I placed in the 8 for day one, and in day two did substantially worse, failing to make the second round - There were some very good foilists there - many are expected to return.

Hmm, Im thinking about coming this year. I used to fence at FAP and I did the first 3 galas they had. Do Brian Meakim or Steve Schnell still fence there?

You should come! Brian shows up every once in a blue moon and Steve not at all, but the rest of us are quite nice, nevertheless.

    registration deadline?

heya all, first time poster, senior college student in PA.
had a quick Q bout the upcoming FAP gala, how does one go about getting registration for classification? like, A, B, C, D, and U? i'm an international student, and i think at one point i was registered as unclassisfied, but that was a few years back.
also, is registration only valid for one year?
FAP hosts, would it be possible to register for classification at the door?
    many thanks for any help!

There are many threads here about classifications: but briefly, they are assigned to you by how you finish at a USFA sanctioned tournament. The strength of a competition and where you finish will determine if you receive a classification, and what it will be. You must be a USFA member to compete unless you have a current FIE license, which the USFA recognizes. Most people start as Unclassified when they join USFA. The membership fee is good for one year, but any classification awarded lasts four years, then is down graded by one level.

If you need to join the USFA, you may do so at the door when you register at the Gala - but can still register in advance for the event to save some on the fee.

thanks for the info, artisan, haven't gotten used to the forums quite yet, it'll take me a while to figure out where and what has been side, but thanks!

towards the end of your post, though, i think you hit upon my situation.
the last time i got classification, it was Unclassified, and i think it stayed that way for the oneyear the membership was good for.
you mentioned that while it is possible to register at the Gala, i could also register in advance and save part of the fee. how would i go about doing that, is there a website or someone i could contact?

sorry, i think i wasn't as clear as i should have been in my last post, it was more about registering with USFA that i was wondering about.
i.e., would i need to fill this out, the USFA 04-05 Membership form?

Mmmm, someone might want to update the phildiv-usfa website where it says that the entry fees are $35 for either and makes no mention of higher at-the-door charges.

Wouldn't be too happy to show up and get tagged with higher fees that was posted on the division's official schedule.
