Array If this is your FIRST class you may do more stretching and basic footwork than actual "fencing." Stick with it - you need the basic stuff to ever be good at the fun stuff. -

Just remember, if your first fencing class is done correctly, your legs should hurt for about 5 days. It'll be hard, and not a lot of fun (unless you really like exercise), but what it leads up to will be well worth it. -

Fencing takes muscles in the legs you never knew you had, so stock up on the bengay and aspirin. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moment, lost in time. Gone, like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die" -Phil Ken Sebben -
I didn't really have any problems with my legs, but then again I had been working out (and skateboarding) for months in preperation of my first class. Tonight's my second, so I'm really looking forward to learning more footwork. -

Array My advice is stretch out before, stretch out afterward. Once you get into some "serious" fencing, you may find yourself hobbling around feeling old and decrepit. And enjoy your first class. I just remember that my legs hurt from the footwork and lunges, my arm, shoulder and hand from holding a blade, and I was the worlds MOST uncoordinated person. But I had a good time, and I enjoyed it.
So go have fun at your first class. It may not work right the first day, but eventually you'll get to be the one giving out some advice to the beginners class and watching in sympathy as their legs hurt. -
