Sushi

Does anyone here like to eat sushi? I just started eating it recently and I think its pretty cool.

I'm a bit confused about how to eat it though. I know that stuff that is pressed on rice should be dipped in soy and wasabi but what about the ones that are rolled in a seaweed cone? Are you supposed to dip those at all? And is it alright to just eat it with my fingers since it was made with bare hands anyway?

This is by far the strangest thread I've seen - well it comes close.

Anyway the ones in seaweed - try eating with wasabi etc then try without whatever you prefer.

P.S - I also find it hard to believe this thread - mainly because I just saw that "freak show" thread or whatever it was where you said you were an old asian guy called Ken Suzuki or something.

So does anybody other than RL himself actually know who or what he is? There is so much speculation about him and where he lives and what he does with his life but nobody seems to "really" know.

Im talking about this.

I'm Ok with chopsticks with most oriental food but not sushi. When I try to pick up sushi with chopsticks I usually wind up seperating the meat from the rice.

FTH tracked his name to a guy named Ken Yen Huang. I trust FTH. His email address is Zerofencer@aol.com, though I cannot verify this.

I'm assuming Zerofencer@aol.com is RL's address - it makes sense because "Zero" was a WW2 plane and RL has got the plane avatar. As such FTH is probably right - I think zeros were Japanese and Ken Yen Huang sounds pretty Japanese.

Ooo Those are neat looking.. I am gonna have to look in my recipie book to see how they are made.. once i find the book again that is....

Umm.. they look like they could be okay to eat with fingers.. it is normally an accepted thing.. just watch what others are doing.. and follow.. Depending on the size, it is generally expected to put it all in your mouth at once.. or else it will fall apart.. so chewing with ones mouth open.. as long as you are not spitting on people.. is an okay thing to do as well..

What i really meant by all of that.. Is just.. follow what those who look like they know what they are doing are doing... and.. than you will just look like yoiu know what you are doing.. or do whatever you feel the need to do.. and make it look like you know what you are doing.. than others will follow you, beacuse they will think that they are doing it wrong..

Sorry, Ken Yen Huang is most definately NOT Japanese. Probably Chinese, Japanese names often translate into 2 english words e.g. Noriko Sakai, Ken Watanabe, Ueishiba Morihei. Whereas Chinese names translate more often to 3 or more words, like my own name Leow Shin Hwah or my friend's Au Yong Wing Yau.

DFP hard as it might for you to imagine Sushi eating is not as comman as you might think in Asia. Plus I do not think that RL was born in Asia (If RL really is Ken Yen Huang).

RL What you describe is a sushi Hand roll. I don't know how its done in Japan, but here you eat it with you hands but don't dip it in the Wasabi-soy sauce. Instead take a lump of Wasabi with some soy suace and transfer it to the handroll with chopsticks.

and here was me thinking Japanese names were simillar to Chinese - it probably stems from half the Japanese people at my school being called Wilson, along with half the Chinese ones too.

Hey no worries, we kinda look the same, Japanese and Chinese. Doesn't help that many of us take on english names to make life easier for ourselves. Mine's David.

As EpeeFencer said before they are hand rolls and as the name implies you eat these with your hand.

Just to get a common start, I would like to point out a few items. First Sushi, is not raw fish, that is actually Sashimi, but even that has some cooked items. Sushi is actually the name for the sweetened pickeled rice, not what is put on top.

Also there are 2 types of rolls, hand rolls as described above and cut rolls. Cut rolls are made similar in shape to a sausage and cut into 6 or 8. Usually they are eaten with chopstick, but sometimes with the fingers.

Many other items can be found such as a collar, which is a very large cut roll in the shape of tube (circle). There are shooters which are raw quail eggs and usually uni or oysters in a shot glass. Chirashi is a bowl of rice covered with various sashimi. You have box lunches, which is nothing like an American box lunch. This is little tidbits, in their own section and many sections in a very elaborate box.

The texture goes anywhere from Ika (Squid) and Tako (Octopus) to Uni (Sea Urchin) and Saba (Mackeral). Even from the same fish, the name may be different Tuna is either Maguro (side) or Toro (belly). Even the same name can mean different things Sake is either Salmon or Rice Wine.

It is called rice wine, but it is actually a beer and created like a beer and most think it is served hot, but that is not always the case. In fact, their are some resturants that have a sake list and these are served cold and believe me they can be much more different than between Guiness and Samual Adams.

Also it is not always fish. You have Tori (Chicken) and Tamago (egg) or Tempura which could be vegatables or anything else edible.

I have tried uni and all I can say is it was way too foreign for me. The texture was really repulsive to me. I think I will just stick with the salmon and tuna till I can aquire a better taste for this stuff.
