yeah- my lessons are 35$ for 30 minutesish... I take 3 a week... the rate is relatively steep.... but Sasha Romankov and Slavic Greigorev knows their stuff... so I'm cool with it.

Our Club charges $40 per month flat fee. In that you get mini lessons if you ask for them, access to open electric fencing and classes, free armory services (you have to buy the parts), a monthly newsletter, loaner electric gear for competitions (you break it you buy it, or at least the parts to fix it), access to discount prices on gear purchases (about 10-20% off retail, although it is about a week or so slower than ordering direct as they have to build up a minimum order) and you can sign up for private lessons for $30 for 30ish minutes at a time.

It is also not uncommon for the coaches to announce that they have X number of slots free on such and such a date and whoever signs up for them gets lessons for free. Our club is not very large (maybe a hundred total) and our coaches are decent but not "champion builders" or anything like that. Our club is a non-profit that was founded to promote the sport and provide access to community fencing so our coaches do not make any money except off of private lessons or through the school/parks and rec. programs that they teach at so that really keeps the costs down.

$70 for two months and all equipment is provided. Coaches rock. Two available strips.

    No complaints here.

You may be even more shocked to hear that I (only) pay about € 160 a year for my fencing here in Sweden...

(This is the annual membership fee for my club, but since we have our own Maître d'Armes it does include lessons.)

wow it seems the people in the US pay a lot more than on the continent. at my club we pay $150 nz for a term (about 10 weeks) all equipment provided except for a foil and $10 for an individual lesson that lasts for 40 mins and is freeking good. Me i dont have to pay anything my mums the head coach mwahahaha but i pay for my individual lesson with my coach whose not my mum. now thats confusing...

Our club is doubling the fees as of 1 October -- to a whopping $10 per month for a group that meets twice per week. Of course, that goes hand in hand with having no loaner equipment (1), no real coaches (2), and no permanent, dedicated floorspace (3). But we're working on it!

    (1) Aside from 'retired' personal gear my husband and I loan out
    (2) Just a couple of instructors (my husband and I again) with a history of teaching just to have someone to fence with -- but we're hoping to go to the clinic this summer...
    (3) We meet at a local high school but since we're not a 'school' club, we don't have anything even close to priority for the gym. But being a small, relatively new club, we'll take what we can get!

I've seen them range from $5/hour to $25 a half hour locally. I'd shop around a bit you might find something more in your budget depending on how many clubs there are in your area and your skill level.

A DOLLAR a minute?!?!?! Oh god. I think charging by the minute/10 minute/30 minute/ is ridiculous!

Nope, 17 per month.... I used to pay between 55 and 80 in the states depending on the class. My understanding is that the German government helps to pay for the school costs. So, 17 per month is the cost...

    first fencing.net post

hullo gang: I started high-school coaching about 3 years ago, (the club that i learned with) the school pays me roughly 1200/year to coach 10-25 kids through the school year, 3 times a week (hour and a half each). So if you're a student, dues are $20 for the year. We've recently had to "make" our students purchase equipment, but we do have some gear (electric, spare masks, etc...) to use.

I was asked to teach at a Rec Center, so I was figuring out how much money I would have to charge to make it worth my time since i'd be sacrificing time away from college and work (Subway lol). Guaging the equipment that was available (about 12 full sets of gear--varying sizes) I decided to charge roughly $40 a student for a 5 week twice a week session. (the rec center gets a pretty significant take) as well as a $15 equipment fee if the fencers don't own their own gear. min. class size 6, max. 12. I will be offering private lessons (probably $30 each). Basically, I'm taking a hit not working or studying when I'm coaching (not that i don't love it) so i have to make it up somehow: even coaches gotta eat!

So I guess I'm just trying to put some perspective on what some people charge for their clubs. There are many coaches of varying styles and quality, but I think you have to look at what you are paying for, really. Jujie sounds like a marvelous coach, and that does sound like its worth the price. Also consider your own level of fencing and goals. Recreational? Uber-competitive (who isnt)? The time alone from a coach regardless of what is done is usually worth the price. Comparing lessons to the guitar--I wonder if you agree with my friend that simply having time alone with a quality teacher is well worth the cash (even if they werent' Jimi Hendrix)?

    (i like parentheses)

    cheers,
    matt

Club I work out with in Orange Country, California is $120 a quarter ($30/month), or $440 a year, or $7 per night. Permanent center, with 8 strips on hardwood floor and electric boxes available for each strip (usually only 4 strips are set up for electric). Actually its a pretty nice setup and a lot better than the club I used to fence with.

Available 6:30-10 PM Tues- Fri, and 10-2 on Saturdays. Private lessons additional and are arranged separately. Group lessons around $100 for 8-9 weeks. Students and fencers are expected to bring their own basic equipment (including personal electric equipment).
