I seem to recall the Enteri used a sabre but later replaced with a really cool sword that sounded like a rapier based off of it's description.
I'll have to re-read the books to find out (not that that's a bad thing)

Array Entreri is a fighter/thief with levels as ranger and assassin. He uses longswords and daggers (weapon focus and weapon specialization in each) and his primary weapon is a +3 longsword of wounding and a +4 defending dagger that he uses in his off hand. He could use a saber quite well but I do not know why he would chose one over his primary weapons and do not recall him ever doing so unless he thought it would somehow bug Drizzit.
You may be thinking of Elaith Craulnober of Waterdeep. He is the last of his line and inherited his families ancestral elven moonblade (minor artifact with lots of special abilities), but since he is evil it rejected him and he is hanging onto it for his daughter and has had a slight change of heart leaning more towards LE than NE of late, but will likely never be a nice guy... Array Mostly I do although I am a victim of my success. I have been running with mostly the same group for about 3 years now and I really want to get back into playing as GMing can be a lot of hard work but no one in my group seems to think they can "live up" to the job. I do not think I am that good, as I have ran under some great and very organized GM's but that is the trap of being a decent GM. They are in short supply and as such players tend to want to trap you in that role.
Of course having been a GM for so long I am a pain in the a$$ as a player since chances are I will know the rules better than the person running, know every dirty trick to use including the best weapons/armor combo's for my characters and being an epee fencer I use lots of cover and terrain to my advantage and GM's have to think about things like that to keep my characters from running amuck. I also tend to play rather vicious NE types (if we murder his family we won't have to go looking for him, he will find us) or very lawful Paladins so that does not help as either one can through a party or a campaign into chaos... I take it this is from the 3rd Edition Forgotten Realms sourcebook?
The thing is that in the books Enteri's dagger is a dagger of vamperic regeneration (it's wielder heals as they damage their opponents with it) and he later aquires a sword known as "Charon's Claw." The blade is describe as having a guard that looks like the torso of a skeleten with its arms clasped above it's head. I always pictured it to be similar to the fancy basket guards on rapiers. I could be wrong though. I'm going off of the novels, not the sourcebooks.
I wasn't thinking of Elaith but now that you mention it he does look like the fencing type... Fleche!! Fleche for fantasy.

Strangely enough the only fantasy RPG related books I have ever read were books BEFORE they were games like the Dragonlance series (the first 9 didn’t suck but the lost me after that) and the Wheel of Time novels.
I tend to stick to the sourcebooks and then evolve the changes to my campaign world from the actions of my PC's (all of them, one game builds of another even if it is a completely different group). PC's seem to like to know that the actions of their characters in my campaign world could resonate through history as it were.
For example in my campaign world there is a new kingdom that arose from the ashes of the old Luskan empire shortly after the godfall wars called Ravens Loft, the Dalelands are United and there is a newly founded dale called Cormanthdale that incorporates a large number of ex-adventurers, dwarfs and Eilistraee worshiping drow that is trying to hold the fragile compact together while attempting to ally with other kingdoms to resist the advances of the Zhents, who they recently defeated (along with Scalia Darkblade and Fazoul himself, although he got away) in a rather nasty battle using old forbidden magic that may still have a price to pay... Array I skimmed through "Streams of Silver" last night. Enteri did wield a saber.
My geekness has hit a new level... Fleche!! Fleche for fantasy.
