| Stupid me Just wanted to tell the whole world what happened to me at Fencing practice a few hours ago...
Someone got me good in Epee... right on the pelvic bone... y'know the spot on your hip that has no flesh between the skin and bone?
Man... that'll teach me how to parry instead of trying to get the touch all the time. |

| Pain teaches... that which does not kill us makes us wish we were dead...
And though it doesn't apply to you, I recently saw a shirt at a martial art tournament that read "laziness will cause you pain". Really liked that one.

| Cutter: were you wearing knickers or were you in shorts? The only time I have seen sabre draw blood is when someone gets wacked on their non-weapon hand knuckles.

| being a fellow epee fencer i have taken many a hits to the hip area. it's smarts alright! the worst ever, though (i think) is the throbbing, wind-knocking pain of a lugne that landed just short of you bibbed throat, nearest the clavicle.
let me tell ya', now THAT's pain ... |

| I've seen bloody hits while people were wearing the proper equipment. Man, can you imagine if they WEREN'T wearing it?
At our last tourney, I got hit in the neck, on the side. My throat was sore for a couple days. That one really hurt!

| hehe, quotes. At our school club we have a symbloic mask called thew grisham mask which has quotes all over it. soo many good ones:
e.g.:
"Somites standing up for your friends means killing an awful lot of people"
But most of the quotes are in Latin...
[eas enough to translate though ]

| A sabre fencer in my club got whacked on his pinky on his weapon hand hard enough to raise a blood blister. The next day he fenced in a tournament and got whack in the same place hard enought to cause him to bleed through his glove. He pointed out the blood on his glove and all the sabre fencers said, "Cool!" |

| Got hit on the shin recently (I do epee). You should see the bruise AND cut to go with it (OUCH!). I was being careless.
Worst injury I've seen was a real freak. 2 guys fencing and the tip came off one of the weapons. As the president called halt the guy with the broken tip lunged. Meanwhile the other guys glove had come undone and a bit of his sleeve was poking out. The broken tip caught the sleeve and got deflected inwards. The weapon (a foil if I remember correctly) went up the defenders arm cutting all the way till it got to the elbow then went through his upper arm.
What can I say lots of stiches? A real freak occurence and I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again (thankfully). |

| One time I had a foil blade, tip and all, go through the cord hole in my glove and up my sleeve. just scratched on the way up though, not near as bad as it could have been without the tip on it.

| FencerInUS,
I have a friend who delights in poking her epee through my body cord hole. No scrathes yet but she has made it all the way up to my elbow. Going to a smaller glove size has thankfully reduced this a rare occurance from the weekly one it used to be. |

| wounds happen even with gear on. i got a few at the moment. a scar on my thigh where i was stabbed in the leg in foil. i thought it was just a real sore hit, until i saw blood emerging through my breeches. and a cut down the side of my neck where i was sliced with a sabre 2 days ago. gear helps to remove SOME of the risk. but not all of it. and that makes it kind of exciting.

| I feel terribly ignorant... I have been fencing for 7 years (at a realtively low level) and I have yet to see any of these kinds of injuries.
I am confused how one gets hurt on the side of the neck in sabre. Was it a point attack to a high line that slid up underneath the bib? All of the sabre masks I have seen are very effective at protecting the side of the head and neck... you get hit there a lot. |

| Front thigh off target in sabre... well, NOW it is :-) Seriously, it used to be target even in sport fencing. We're holding a sabre tourney in NYC in May which will include it as target.
My 'favorite' injury sabre was done by a Drew University student (back when sabre was still dry) who did a really sloppy 4 parry and managed to cut his own ungloved left hand. They had to stop the meet for a while to clean the strip up.

| Thanks for empahthizing, folks.
I must say, anything can happen in Fencing. I guess this makes for a fun sport. Besides, if it did not have the element of pain... would it still be same? |

| If it did not have an element of pain, it would be SCA fencing :-(

(Though I astoundingly, I've known even repeated pain to fail to teach. They say of bass, that 1/3 will never take a lure, 1/3 will do so once and never again, and 1/3 will bite the hook repeatedly. I think humans must obey similar laws of nature.) |

| hmmm at JO's in my first DE i had to fence a foil fencer who was fencing saber (his first time ever, only god knows why) and the score was 14-5 i had 14, so the last touch he pretends to fall in his atack and winds his hand back (like behind his back) and swings as hard as he can while falling and swipes across me thigh it actuly broke some skin on my leg and i had a welt across my butt and my thigh hurt like hell and the ref didnt give him a yellow card or anything for falling or hitting so damn hard off target, and it was obveus that it was diliberate(sp?)
