| Names on lames So, I was just reading the message on nicknames/last names and was wondering who actually has their name printed on the back of their lames?

| I do. Rules in Canada are different, so I haven't attended a tournament where it was needed, yet. Hopefully several this season, though.
Mine ended up on my lame as a gift/surprise/joke by a guy at my club though. We had otherwise identical lames (make and size, both relatively new), so he switched them, and sent mine off to be marked with my name and country ... |

| They look awesome.
I'm gonna get one once I get good. (Really low-level fencers (like weak E's) can look kinda annoying with their name and "USA" on their lamés.)
They look awesome. I want to see everyone say, "Hey, look, there's %^&*(^! over there. He looks good." Especailly if it's one of those lamés that fits really well, so it's a little tight and your target is covered perfectly, but it's not TOO tight, and it doesn't look like you're trying to cheat your opponent.
And my name isn't Biggs, thank goodness, I don't like short names on lamés. They don't balance right with the "USA". The best size, IMHO, is about 6-8 letters. |

| I have my name on my now dead lamé, but it's dead so I couldn't use it. Now I have my name on my pants, so I can fence foil and épée whenever I want. ('twas my mom's idea...)

| Wow, I'm so clueless sometimes....
I had no idea that having a name on your lame was a fashion thing. I thought it was done merely because it was required at national and international tournaments...

I only compete at local and collegiate competitions so it's not required and I don't have it on my lame, though sometimes I wish I did because often it makes things easier for opponents/referees to make sure I'm on the right strip at the right time. |

Then you just look like a scrub wanting to look cool.
You know, a poser.

| It can also be an intimidation factor.
Good fencers have their names on their lames, so if you have your name on your lame, you must be good, right? |

Never even thought people would be intimidated by the fact that someone could send their lame to Oregan and pay $25 to have their name stenciled on. It's not like a rating or Olympic uniform that you have to earn. You just gotta have the $ to get it done. Even then, it's not a lot of $...
Usually, the fencers that impress me do so by their skill and win/loss record.

| Well its only about $20 more expensive to get your name printed on your lame when we order it from uhlmann, so if you will have to have you're name on it in future it's ok. I do agree with you achilleus you should have some skill to pull it off. But then you can say "haha they got their name on their lames and I wiped the floor with them".
I think it looks cool - "Bloggs NZL" yeah
I need to get my lame named on the back cos im trying to fence in international comps. Would just using a stencil work? what type of paint should i use that wont "block" the resistance of the metalic threads?

Usually, the fencers that impress me do so by their skill and win/loss record. | Still ... it's true. There's an intimidation factor.
I've had more than one fencer who was all worried when about to go up against someone in pristine, brand-new FIE gear and a lame with their name on the back ... usually a bell that's bright and shiny too.
I have to point out that having money doesn't make one a good fencer ... then I point out someone good, and point out how old and worn in their equipment is (or, perhaps, just point at mine. yeargh!) -- and tell them to worry more when their opponent looks like they've used their equipment before. |

| I am gonna put "Eat Me" on my lame. I may even register under that name and tell them I am from Malta, so they think the name is ethnic.
As for the intimidation factor, i a going with the rolled up sock in the crotch of my knickers!

| Note to self: Buy shiny new belles for all tournaments, fence like an idiot during first few pool bouts, start fencing halfway through, catch everyone off guard, and rinse/repeat with donated bell guard |

Personally, I recently took a magic marker and did EVERYTHING. Including my screwdrivers. (Yeah, I've lost screwdrivers before). I hate stuff theft.
And they DO look cool, as long as you don't completely suck. It's like a colored lamé, they look cool, but you have to be good to keep people's respect up.
Hey, by the way-how can you see people's names when they have a dark blue lamé? |
