| Best Movie of the Year (Thus Far) I was talking to some friends about the movies we've seen this year and which ones we thought were the best. I thought I'd get the opinions of the wonderful posters of fencing.net
Which movie do you think has been the best movie to be released in US theaters this year?

I was tempted to pay admission and watch the movie again immediatly after I finished watching it the first time.

| Hell, I can't remember all of the movies I've seen this year. Collateral and Spider-Man 2 stand out, but I have to have seen something better than those two.

Shaky camera thing, but an AWESOME concept still.
The edit was that I spelled "concept" wrong.

Usually kung fu movies look so silly with the flying and stuff but I totally bought it in Hero. There is a scene in Hero where 2 warriors are fighting on water that was so breath taking that it made the bamboo fight scene in Croutching Tiger look clumsy. |

| Hidalgo?!?! Yeeeesh!!! That movie managed to disappoint my lowered expectations. I want my $1.00 back, so I can see quality second-run fare, like "Anacondas".
I really liked the update of the Manchurian Candidate. It's a different movie than the original, which is one of my faves.
Spider-Man 2 really was neat except for the cringe-inducing science; a few dramatic moments were spoiled by hysterical laughter.
Winter is Oscar season, that's when all the heavy-hitting fare comes out.

| The best movie I've seen so far this year would have to be either The Village, or Alien Vs. Preditor. (Keep in mind the fact that I haven't seen very many movies this year...)

| Hard to make a good flick from a true story, so don't blame Vigo for the director, but there's still Mighty Mike's, "Fahernheit 911". ROCKS...(throw them all.) |

'Collateral' and 'The Manchurian Candidate' were good, but by no means the best so far...'Shrek 2' was awesome...'Troy' was mediocre...
I'm still holding out for Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Also want to see 'Cellular' when it comes out. |

Well, since the story is about as untrue as you get, one would hope for a better movie. Google "hidalgo truth" and see where you get.
There is no documented evidence (other than Hopkins' writings themselves) that show him participating in *any* endurance race, or even show that there was a great "Ocean of Fire" race across Arabia.
If there are all these mysterious primary sources (as the filmmakers and even Viggo himself mentioned once the film was challenged), why are NONE of them named or speaking out? But despite looking, nobody who is associated with equine, Native American, or even Buffalo Bill Cody history has found any evidence of the Hidalgo story actually happening.
If you admit it's fiction, that's fine. "The English Patient" was a beautiful novel about history, racism, colonization, love, and Nazis. Unfortunately, the infamous Count Almasy was gay, which would make it very difficult to be get all burned up ( ) over the love of a woman. No problems: Michael Ondaatje never said he was writing anything but fiction, and the movie never billed itself as a true story.

| Well, it came out last year, but I saw it this year: City of God was an amazing movie. Of the hollywood movies I saw this year, Manchurian Candidate was the most exciting. I agree with Army Fencer that Eternal Sunshine was the best movie I've seen this year.
