[CFML] Saber: Flat or Edge

I just received a reply from the past President of the Acad=E9mie d'Armes
Internationale (AAI) (the world certifying organization of fencing masters)
which maintains close ties to the Federation Internationale d' Escrime (FIE=
)
which makes (and changes) the rules for fencing (modern fencing that is).
They are originally written in French and then later translated by the
United States Fencing Association (USFA) into English. Below Master Bunke i=
s
referring to the original rules set by the FIE.

>>"The French rules dated 1972 still state that=20
>>"touches must be made cleanly and plainly with=20
>>the point, the fore-edge and the back-edge to=20
>>be counted ...". The 1978 version has the word=20
>>"plat" (flat) added. The change must therefore=20
>>have been introduced between 1972 and 1977.=20
>>During these years the first electric sabre=20
>>prototypes were presented which seems to suggest=20
>>that the change was introduced to suit the electric=20
>>sabre.=20
>>Mike Bunke

Blessings,
Rez Johnson
