| Bobcat? Long Beach? Just curious about the preps for the Bobcat tourney coming up in San Marcos next weekend (as I type this). Looks like about 80-90 have prereg'd for epee; will the organizers be able to handle the numbers this year?
Similar questions about the Long Beach event much farther to the West in October. What's that going to be like? |

This is one of the most well organized events in the Pacific Coast. Once people start sending their registration papers in, you'll get to see who signed up for it.

| The Bobcat tournament this year could be an A4 tournament for mixed Epee and an A2/B3 tournament for mixed foil. http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.p...rnament_id=550 http://askfred.net/Events/whoIsComin...rnament_id=550
The tournament includes 3-weapon Mixed Open and Cadet events, and 2-weapon U12 and U10 events. The Saturday Cadet and Youth events are at an adjacent venue.
Prior events that I have attended have been smooth. The crew includes people who have had experience putting together events of this size. They have been asking everybody in the referee list to come and help.
I suspect that there might be some minor delays but it will be a great experience.

| Adjacent venue? I've looked at the map for the venues and the Jowers gym and the Aqua center don't look adjacent to me. Will the open foil event finish in time to allow the cadet foilist who entered both events to make it to the other venue? Will amorers be at both venues?

| It is my understanding that they plan to be flexible. The venues will be split only for Saturday. The only issue would be for referees and for Cadet Foil participants as the Y12 or Y10 can not participate in the Open event. Perhaps a Y12 foil fencer (Aquarena) wanted to do the Cadet Saber event (Jowers), they might need to choose.
Aquarena is across the small lake: http://www.maps.txstate.edu/l3_5.html
On Sunday, all events are expected at Jowers. http://www.maps.txstate.edu/l3_12.html

| I plan on going to this tournament. I hope they run it's run well but I trust those folks. This will be the largest event I've been to.

I certainly hope that doesn't prove to be the case. |

| SATURDAY September 11
9:00 AM - Mixed Foil (Jowers) - 75 fencers A2/B3 - 13 strips
1pm - Mixed Saber (Jowers) - 25 fencers C2 - 4 strips (might start later)
2pm - Cadet Saber (U17) (Jowers) - 4 fencers - NR - 1 strip
Jowers: needs about 13 strips
12noon - Cadet Foil (U17) (Aqua Sports) - 31 fencers B2 (might start later) - 5 strips
1pm Y12 Foil (Aqua Sports) - 15 fencers - NR - 3 strips
2pm Y10 Foil (Aqua Sports) - 8 fencers - NR - 2 strips
AquaSports: needs about 5 strips SUNDAY September 12 ALL IN JOWERS
9:00am - Mixed Epee - 89 fencers - A4 - 15 strips
11am - Cadet Epee (U17) - 51 fencers - A2 - 9 strips (might start later)
12noon Y12 Epee - 14 fencers - NR - 3 strips
1pm Y10 Epee - 7 fencers - NR - 1 strip
Jowers: needs about 15 strips
I do not see anticipated delays for the major events (mixed Foil or Epee) due to issues of venue. The only "flexibility" would be for kids that are fencing in the mixed Foil, and did well in DE's who might be little late for Cadet Foil. Obviously, the bouts in Cadet Foil start, and the late kids will have to fence back to back bouts in pools.
The people at Texas State have done very good job organizing in the past. I do not see this event to be an exception. The South Texas division has organized large tournaments in the past quite succesfully. The Longhorn (UT-Austin) ran very well with 100 Epee competitors last year.

| Bobcat Open Texas State has two large gyms for the tournament, has 20 strips and still getting more, and I am hiring as many directors as I can so the tournament will run as smooth and as fast as it usually does. |

| Also as far as the split venue we will be very lenient with fencers making this transition |

I certainly hope that doesn't prove to be the case. | Thats pretty much been my experience as well. There's a large difference between appropriate scheduling, and too much flexibility. Of course there is also fault on the part of fencers, a few (not all, but enough) who want to enter every possible event they can, feel its their divinely-promised right to do so, and that everyone else needs to cater to their specific individual wants. That of course doesn't describe every fencer who enters multiple events in a single day, there are many who are willing hustle and run between events if they have to. But the one's who demand that the entire tournament be organized around their desires are widespread enough to create real problems.
Oddly enough though, its been my experience as a tournament organizer/promotor, if the Bout/Technical Committees and referees refuse to put up with this nonesense, and run the events efficently, they develop a reputation for putting on good events, that draw even more fencers, far outwieghing the slight finiancial loss incurred by catering to the selfish few.
Whew...
did I rant a bit too much? |

| As someone that hosts a bigger event I can honestly say that when things grow bigger than expected changes must be made to keep the fencers fencing.
I have been at JO's where the venue was in three different buildings. Now that was interesting but it was needed.
I have heard a lot of good things about the bobcat and I hope everyone will attend even though it's bigger (which is a good thing) than has been expected. |

| I guess given the sheer size, there is no flexibility. http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.p...2edbb63ebc68ba
Edited to remove the quote as an official of the bout committee has posted below.
