That Photojournalist photo was pretty sweet. I think the artist wanted to capture the speed and agility of the sport, rather than just showing a really good parry (or wotnot). The public, after all, wouldn't appreciate a really good parry... only the minority of fencers would.
I think that was the gold medal bout of the men's individual foil between Salvatore Sanzo of Italy and Brice Guyart of France. The guy kicking was Guyart but I don't think it was intentional. The president did give Guyart a red card but I'm not sure if it was for the kicking or trying to get a hit on Sanzo after he went down on the piste and I think it was after halt too.
Guyart got a red card because he had had a yellow one earlier for corps a corps. This was his second offense. When watching the touch in real speed, it didn't seem like he was trying to put any force into his "kick". It kind of looked like he was off balance, and while trying to catch his balance back he inadvertently let his foot go forward. Another thing that he might have been trying is to cover his lame with his knee since Sanzo was below him and he didn't want to be hit on target.
Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial
