Well, let's focus on what I feel to be the points that need to be highlighted in order to better approach the entire Italian Tempo issue:

1) Do you feel that Sanzo, Vanni and Cassara have a similar fencing style?

Do you think that Sanzo and Cassara are more related then, say, Vanni and Joppich?

2) Do you think that all the well observed definitions to Vanni/Romankov's attack differences can change the fact that they both use - as you characterize it - a long preperation tempo attack, in contrast to Sanzo which uses very two beat simple tempo change? Meaning, are Vanni and Romankov farther away in their concept of tempo then Vanni and Sanzo (or Cassara)?

3) Focusing on Cassara - do you feel he fences with tempo changes, excepting the final thrust or flick? - watch him score with a thrust and not a flick and you'll see what's a stettering clown from a whole other angle...

If you've answered no to some of these, can you really speak of an Italian Tempo? And if so, how do you reconcile it with your answers?

Cool! At some point in the near future, I'll pull out my DVDs and make an effort to really look at the Italians; doing this stuff from memory is too hard. And/or, I'll wait for Grasshopper's analysis.

I forgot to mention earlier... some compare/contrasty stuff can be done now. On fencingfootage.com, there's Romankov's stuttering clown attack. On this website, we have Cassara making similar action against Coutant (FRA) -- it's the video clip for an article called "Ides of March". Vanni/Sanzo would be closer, there's some fencingfootage.com clips of the Italy/China 2003 WCh match
