    Fixing a mask liner

Does anyone know of a place that will put a new liner in a mask? The inside of my electric sabre mask is a thin nylon material. Where it rubs against my lame, the material is wearing through and the padding is starting to come out. I'm usually pretty handy in the sewing department but I don't think I can get my sewing machine to go through the whole bib.

You're right about the machine...You would probably break the needle if you could even get the material under the presserfoot.

However, You might take it to a shoe repair shop and ask them to sew it for you. They have much bigger and stronger machines. Then again, you could sew it by hand. Using a curved apolstery needle might make it easier.

    Good luck

Hmmm...sounds like you've got a Prieur mask. I love mine for foil/epee, but the beard does tend to shred the lining. I kinda altered it by modifying a Triplette removable liner for use, but it still didn't stop the shredding...just slowed it down a lot. I habve an Uhlmann for sabre and haven't had the same problem...probably because someone realized that perhaps there should be a liner more than a micron thick!

I'll have to talk to a show repair place or buy the ulpostery needles.

    Thanks for the ideas.

    btw, Mergs....DUCT TAPE?????

There are hand-held sewing machines that are desgined for getting into just shuch hard-to-reach spots. I know people who own or have access to one who've been able to re-line their mask bibs. You might go to a tailor's shop and ask if you could have it done-- they'd be as likely as anyone to have the equipment to do it (or could likely stitch it in by hand quickly and easily).

    Sam,

Of course Duct Tape! It fixes everything, (well almost everything, could be used to fix marriges, but they have to eat every once and a while, and then the whinning starts.....I digress), hell, it's a major consumable for the shuttle and space station. Spaceflight approved, a modern miracle, surely it'll fix something a minor as a saber mask.

Besides, it's like the Force. Has a light side and a dark side and binds the universe together!

Sheesh, it was the obvious answer.

Thanks for all the advice. It looks like we have two camps here: The tailor/shoe repair camp and the duct tape camp. At the risk of offending the highly devoted duct tape camp, I think I'm going to have to go to a professional seamster/tress. I don't think I could get used to the feel of duct tape against my face, even the non-sticky side.

I'm crushed, but then again, it IS your mask/face. Good luck and let us know how it works out.
