It kind of depends. If you are 6'5" and several hundred pounds like me it is probably legal. If you are a ten year old girl it is probably not. Unless you are a ten year old girl with a VERY long neck.

As I understand it, the length of the bib is kind of like the thing with pistol grips. If all depends on the person using it. With the bib it isn't supposed to come down past your collar bones I think. With pistol grips your thumb should be no more then 2cm away from the gaurd. If you have a big grip and little hands then that grip might not be legal for you but might be for me. Same with the mask. Besides, I would not worry about the mask past having it pass the punch test. No mask I have ever seen used in foil competition is legal according to the rules! :-)

There is a rule, M27 or so I think, that says that the mesh of a foil mask must NOT extend below the chin of the fencer and that the mesh must be insulated INTERNALLY and EXTERNALLY by an impact resistant plastic material.

Since it is really hard to get plastic INSIDE steel wire and every mask I have ever seen comes to BELOW the chin, none of them are legal for foil. The fact that this rule exists does go a long way to confirming my belief that the sport of foil is just a practical joke that got out of hand!

Wierd indeed. Well, as long as my precious face is well protected behind the mesh and my mask passes in the tourneys, I'm not too concerned.

One of the most fun practical jokes, I find. Far more fun than sabre or epee ;-)
