Array Wow, the hard-hitting journalism of breakfast television. "What did you do after your event?" That's right up there with, "How did it feel, getting that Olympic medal? Were you excited?"
Which is why I don't watch breakfast television . . . "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never . . . never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense." Churchill, 1941 -
Sada was also inteviewed on Morning Edition today, in a segment about how athletes at the games handle victory and defeat, and how the notions of what athletes should feel about victory and defeat have changed (the notion of unemotional, "gentlemanly sportsmanship" was purely a construct of De Coupertin's Victorian aristocratic elitism, and had nothing to do with the ancient games). Sada talked about how she handled not making it to the gold medal bout, and then talking with Arkady to redirect her motivation towards making sure she won the bronze (remember how poker-faced she was after winning that bout?). She closed the segment saying how she's already thinking about Beijing.
The audio can be found at http://www.npr.org/rundowns/rundown....g-2004&prgId=3, under the title "Winner-take-all Attitude Not New to Olympics".

Array So... Mariel wins the gold, Sada wins the Bronze, and still Sada is getting the press. Whats going on? why aren't they at least doing publicity together? -

Array I wonder if Mariel is off at college orientation? Sada's just returning to college, Mariel's starting. "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. -

Array Freshmen dorm room summer essay, "What did I do this summer?"
"Gee, first went to Tauberbischofsheim in Germany, won a World Cup, came home to find out I made the Olympic team, went to Greece, beat four others for a gold medal. Came back just in time to get settled here." -

Array "Tauberbischofsheim" should count for about 250 words right there. -

Array I think it's also partly that all these channels prep for one thing pretty far ahead -- they thought Sada had the best chance at winning, so they did all theri material and research on HER. They aren't at all ready or willing to change their shows to include mariel instead. It's kinda funny.
We've all seen those baseball games where for instance a pitcher is going for his record breaking win but he gets taken out in the first inning. They're still talking about this guy who's outta the game for the rest of the game because that's what they prepped. -Sabresque

Array Being the Favorite Being the underdog takes a lot of pressure off the athlete. It seems to be a curse to be the favorite although it did work for Carly Patterson.
When Michelle Kwan didn't win the gold, she was asked what it felt like to "fail." sigh....
Mariel did get a tiny picture on the front page of Sports Illustrated and there is a paragraph and a picture on the inside. (the latest issue)
It is still so cool she won!! A friend will bail you out of jail,
a true friend will help you hide the body...: ) Similar Threads -
