How 'bout a fencer who declares that he shall refuse to salute or shake hands after a bout and specifically requests that a Black Card be issued in clear protest to the referee and to the Bout Committee? True story from Sacramento.

while i find some of this behavior annoying i think little of it is actually unsportsmanlike. for example: refusing to shake hands with an opponent or to otherwise disrespect your opponent regardless of skill level or who won or even if the outcome hinged on a poor call is unsportsmanlike, attempting in anyway to hurt or disrespect you opponent before after or during the bout is unsportsmanlike, but celebrating after everyone of yoru touches... irritating perhaps but not really wrong. indicating that one has been touched is unsporstmanlike only in very rare cases ( in disrespect fro the referee for example) the kiai screams may irritate an opponent but are not at all condeming to my mind. these are all my opinions of course but.... what else do i have?

The tantrums are a given to me, but even with "cool" fencers, I hate the disrespectful attitude. Even in forgetfulness, I don't like it when someone starts to disconnect themselves and speaks with their coach before giving myself and the judge our proper respects in terms of a salute and handshake.

I actually fenced under a guest coach from a more "competitive" club, and he would yell at me for performing a full salute. He stated anything other than those quick, "point-at-the-opponent" salutes screamed victim. He did have a lot else to teach me in terms of form and mentality, but this has always been a point of contention and really lost me a little respect for him. For me, the bout starts when I hear "fence" and ends when I hear "halt", and I really don't want to carry the competition off the strip. A fencer should respect his fellow fencers whether he thrashes him 15-0 or goes labelle.
