    Hello from Southern California

    Hello everyone,

I'm currently 17 and just started to gain interest in fencing. After asking around I learned that many of my friends are as well so we all decided that we somehow would find an instructor in our area and go and take lessons. Half the battle to any sport is determination and the other half well that’s just practice.

I was surprised to learn that my father was a fencer in his day and soon became his school champion and earned various other awards. I was very surprised to hear all this and then kindly asked him to teach me. He laughed and said maybe when I was older. I can only hope he was kidding....

That's the list of clubs in that state. Find one that's in your general area. There are many strong clubs in that general area, so you should be able to find one that best fits your needs.

Verto, where in Southern California? I fence in Irvine and compete (sporadically) in USFA tournaments at Cal State Long Beach.

If you become a foilist we may cross blades one day!

    Welcome aboard.

Do you have to be attending UCI in order to fence there?

UCI's Fencing Club is a student-run club under the aegis of the Anteater Recreation Center, so you need to be a member of the Rec Center to join. (This boils down to being a student, a faculty or staff member, or the dependent/family member of a student, faculty, or staff member.) I'd have to check with the Rec Center about non-members fencing there, but I believe that it would involve being vouched for by a member, paying a fee, and signing a waiver.

I've met a couple of fencers from UCI but I never got the chance to ask them if I could go fence with them. I think there is a man there named Eric who teaches foil.

Yes, Eric Holmgren. We also have an epee coach, Eric Morris. There must be some cosmic force at UCI that draws coaches named Eric.
