bill_mchale is on a distinguished road
Hi from Maryland

Hi, ok, I will admit, probably not the first, but I saw some of the women's sabre competition on the olympics and it has gotten me rather interested in fencing and well since I am out of shape and need some physical activity that will keep me interested anyway, i am thinking of giving Fencing a try. I have found a suprisingly large number of fencing clubs in the Baltimore/DC area, even after you factor out school clubs.

That being the case, does anyone recommend a particular club to take a class from? I do have the further stipulation that I can really only commit to Monday or Wednesday nights, maybe Friday nights or something on Saturday mornings or anytime on Sunday. I really don't have a preference to weapon.. I mean I like the idea of epee but frankly I would prefer try the weapons before committing to one.

Oh just a bit more information about me. I am 34 and definitely out of shape. I have no illusions of olympic gold and would be suprised if I ever became a serious competitor (Not that I would be disappointed if I found I had talent . I am just looking for a way to have fun and work up a good sweat (And hopefully loose some of the pounds that sitting in front of a computer for 10 years has put on.).

Thanks in advance for your input.

DC Fencer's club is arguably the best club in the area, and despite the name, is actually in Silver Spring, just off Georgia inside the Beltway. Adult beginner classes start in the fall. The web site is www.dcfencing.com.

Good luck! Have fun.

The best thing to do is go visit the clubs in your area and look around. Fencers are friendly and will be willing to answer questions.

Good luck and welcome to the sport! Quite a large number of us started in adulthood.
