    Mariel on cover of Tribune!

Just picked the Chicago Tribune off the doorstep and there she is, winning the gold, right on the cover. Inside, there is a huge two page spread about her and fencing. Amazing...

I'm so glad we have a beginner's class starting in two weeks.

What a day for fencing in Chicago...

And yet in my metroplex, the state newspaper didn't even mention fencing (or soccer) gold victories.

LA Daily News, too...below a bigger picture of the men's swimming team. Not on the front of the sports section, but a nice article inside...only one minor inaccuracy (1st fencing gold ever for the US...forgetting the 1904 single-sticks gold.)

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

But according to American Fencing Magazine, single-sticks only had American competitors...

    Hey all,
How about cutting out those articles and sending them to Cathy, Mariel's mom? Make a great momento, articles from other cities for them.

Send to: Cathy Zagunis, c/o Oregon Fencing Alliance

With a very good sample of what sabre sounds like! "En garde . . . pret . . . allez! . . . beep SCREAM! crowd roars"
"Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up.

So very true! During the bouts, there didn't seem to be too much screaming.
It is good it showed up on the NPR report.

The picture on the opening page of Mariel with the gold and Sada looking fondly at her is just so cool!! Both women are really amazing. The picture shows a lot of maturity and good sportsmanship.

She made the cover of Stars and Stripes, too, albeit a small one in the lower lefthand corner. There was also about a 4" column story on her in the sports "section".

    Way to go girls!!!
