| Sewing a lamé to make it fit? I bought a lamé... And... It is too big for me.. At least an inch too big around the chest.. and there are a few inches around the waist.. Of just extra fabric... Is there any way.. To like.. Sew it.. To make it fit better??? Using like folds in it or somthing.. I don't know if its legal... I am jsut confused! And mabey.. If it ever does fit.. I could just take out the stitches in it.. and.. make it get big again?!?!?! Sorry if this doens't make any sence.. |

| Why didn't you just buy a lame that fits?

| could return it?
anyway, i'm sure that if you try and are competent in sewing, you can make it work.
the problem is, though, that if you try and sew it and fail, you'll be buying a new one anyway... |

| I had to use a lame that was about 5 sizes too big for me for a while. So I feel your pain. For now just deal with it until you can save up money to get another. In the end that lame can become your practice one, and the new one you buy can be your tournament lame.

makes perfect sense...
should be no problem overlapping the lame' and sewing the parts together that you want to - ensure the metal to metal thread touches so they will conduct and use big stiches (may be best to hand sew) so that you can unpick later if and when you need to... or if you stuff it up easy to unpick and fix it..
anyway a big bagy lame is a laugh as it can really tick off your opponent - they think they have hit you when the lame is pushed in so they don't puch any further and with draw their point - but low and behold it hansn't hit any body parts so hasn't depressed 500 grams yet ... - but i speak of this one who has fenced peole in baggy lames and been the really ticked off person but I can look back on those bouts as learning experience!! (yep - learning how to hit ones opponent HARD! )
We recently had to expand a few (..) of our lame's as our guys are getting a little bigger - my fault - not making them sweat enough (ok .. ok.. perspire.. sweat is what pigs do..) - lucky they are backzip - just inserted a piece of lame material and another zip half to zip onto the other half - works perfectly (so far.. only been 2 weeks..)

| yes, you can take it in. just make sure you sew it from the inside so you dont have an issue with the lame material. if you do it from the inside and you are a pretty decent sewer, it shouldent be a problem. its alright to use the machine just as long as you know what you are doing.

| Nothing wrong with folding it in and sewing it down. Very common thing to do to jackets if you have long arms (may have to buy a jacket a size or two too large just toget sufficient arm length, then fold in the back of the jacket).
Just make sure it's sewn down along the entire length of the fold so you minimize the chance of catching a point sliding along your back...may want to do it so the fold faces down to the tush instead of up toward the neck. |

The only differance between a male and female foil or sabre lame is the addition of darts for the breasts on a female lame, and that's purely an issue of fitting.
I have sold many men's lames to women who are a bit large below the breasts, because a lame of the proper chest size may be too small down by the gut. |

| It's too bad you aren't located anywhere near me....I'd fix it for you without a problem. I do a lot of seamstress work (including altering fencing gear). The Rennies love me. Anyway, this happened to a kid in my club a couple years ago. My advice would be to take it in from the inside, instead of folding the fabric on the outside. It's realatively easily done for anyone who does any amount of sewing. Good luck! |
