I love Bjork! They should have kept that dress moving on. ;-) The beginning stuff with the dude on the cube was a little lame.

Parade of nations was , well the parade of nations. I was glad to see the soccer players from Iraq greeted the way they were. Their story is truly an amazing sports story.

And the torch lighting was cool.

I thought it was amazing. The effects from the stadium (fireworks, etc.) were pretty cool.

Hey, I don't know what it's like in other countries, but the advertising here in Canada is including all kinds of Fencing shots. Royal Bank of Canada, Rogers Television, etc. are all airing Olympic Commercials with Fencing front and center with other popular sports. Something I have never seen before. Possibly because Sherraine McKay may be bringing home our first medal in fencing? Will have to wait and see!

I loved the opening ceremony, and thought it was quite amazing. Especially the history of greek on those platforms that roll around the stadium. That must have taken years to organized.

I did have several gripes with it though. For instance, Bjork. My jaw dropped when I heard how outrageously horrible she was at singing. I knew she wasn't good, but wow. In my opinion that was a pretty bad decision from the IOC.

The marathon runner going through the history of the olympics and falling due to the world wars was interesting, and I like how they set that up. They did a lot of things in English though, with French and Greek being the other languages they did. Why French though? Why not Spanish, or Chinese? Heck more people watching the Olympics are probably from China (or maybe not? I don't know... but why French?)

She has a heavy Icelandic accent. You either find it interesting or you don't.

Would you prefer Janet Jackson maybe? ;-)

I think the most interesting part to me was that both Afghanistan and Iraq were sending female athletes for the first time ever (2 each). Yay world progression! However, our "friends" Saudi Arabia, still refuse to send women. Hmmmmm.....

They also talked extensively about how many athletes live in America or somewhere else, but compete for their home country or country of heritage. Does that mean I can compete for Scotland, since that's where my ancestors are from, or Isreal on the other side? Maybe it would be easier to make one of their teams.

edit: oh, and I like Bjork, darnit!

The comercials last night were better than at the super bowl. At least, in the U.S. I'd read during the show and then watch during the commercials. It was great.

I only caught the end of the ceremony. Did anyone else think the torch looked like a giant joint?? I liked the giant french fry container torch we had I 1996 better.

    C'mon, don't get me started.

I also did not like the commentary on the athletes as they were walking arond the stadium who were from countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. They just mentioned the lated terrorist threat and how it related to their country, and that they "probably won't win a medal, but will have some pretty good pictures to take home!" o_O

To be fair, the opening ceremonies in general had some elements which did not look as though they were designed by and for the "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" quintet. That's better than some of the other recent Olympics.

Someone should definitely tell the commentators that they don't HAVE to say everything that comes into their head. Sometimes silence is acceptable.
