    rewiring epees

i've got a blade and a few weeks ago the wire popped out in a 2-inch section of the blade. since i'm not that skillful in repairing anything yet, i managed to somehow mess up gluing it back together. now it's glued down, but i ended up putting the glue on top of the other glue, and i think i used too much. i think i should now completely rewire it. is there a way to rewire it without needing a whole new wire?

Not that I know of...you could get the old glue off the wire, but then you'd have a stripped wire as well.

Just rewire it...trying to save the wire is not worth the irritation.

Chalk it up to a learning experience.

when you rewire it, remember the golden rule. To much glue is worse than too little.

Unless you need the weapon immediately for a tournament. I say fence with it till the wire fails. Scrape off the excess glue on the blade, (watching out for the wire) and call it good. That is unless you really really want to spent the time and money rewiring a working blade. Typically no matter how much you "reglue" that spot will pop out again and again until the wire gets caught and breaks.

    have fun either way

Now here is the question: I've got a blade suffering a similar problem (well, that the wire has come out). Would it be possible to put the blade, tang down, in acetone up to (but not including) the tip? Now, assuming that capilary action doesn't pull acetone into the tip, will this destroy a german wire, or could if then be reglued?

(Hey, its $4.50-$5.50 for a new wire, I'm reaching, but...)

    Theoreticly that should work....
Although my preference is jsut to put more superglue on it.

I've done quite a few re-wires in the past, to get the wire off w/o breaking it, acetone can get it out. Just take it apart, take apart the tip and put the blade (with outer tip casing still on it) into a copper tube dip tank full of acetone for about an hour, if you want to , you can wait til the next day. The wire will slip right out of the channel (use pliers to take it out of dip tank). If you'd like, I'll find out how to make the copper pip dip tank and tell whoever wants to know , how to make one (PM me). You CAN save your wires people!!!! (as long as you're careful)

Oh dear... I just realized... we've got an acetone bath, which should work quite well. But duco does NOT come off with acetone, or not well. I'll give it a try, but I think its going to pull the usual rubberized stunt, and I'll have to cough up for a new wire. Oh well.

Duco normally comes off with acetone for me.. as long as you are willing to do some scraping with a metal toolish thing afterwards while it is all still soft.... If you wait too long.. it just makes thigns difficult...

See, thats true. The problem is, I don't mind using acetone for a complete rewire, but I am trying to save the wire (get it clean and re-glue it) and since Duco doesn't disolve, just turns rubbery... well, it might or might not work. Worst I can do is give it a try, I need to rewire anyway.

But I do know what you mean about waiting too long. That gets ugly.
